Title: TV - Sixteen and counting.
Post by: MAK on March 13, 2013, 12:06:06 pm
Last night showed a couple with 11 children and another on the way who want to be more self sufficient. She wants a few acres in the country and they have made a start by getting an allotement. It took them 30 minutes to dress the kids ( 3 under 18 months) and leave the house in their mini bus. The trail of kids visiting the allotement stretched across the site and the busy parents surveyed the plot covered in weeds. If that family ever get to make a go of that allotement then I take my hat off to them. A garden outside a back door would be their best bet if ever they can afford the move. Impressive how determined some people are to live the simple life and grow their own.

MAK, our thoughts too, they were very organised unlike the other family, there was another family that have a bakery business and they were comendable too.
I think they will manage as there are a few on here who love the big family life, at least, in a few years, they will be able to give a hand and I am sure they will get their house and land!!
My middle daughter only has 4 children Hi Beck, she is on here sometimes!! they had the same dream and did have a big garden, they kept pigs at one stage, then ducks and chickens and also had 5 dogs and had a cat in the past, now,  they moved to Austrailia and my son in law happened to work for a farmer as a joiner in his buiness, ended up with a house thats being done up, land, down the road from the huge farm and near a huge forest where my son in law has shooting rights and wood gathering rights, they do have a log burner, they get more animals by the day, lost count now but they have at least one horse? some sheep, I think 5 at the last count, getting a cow, got some hens, 2 cats and 2 dogs and so want us to emigrate...very very tempting......I could/can see them having a few more tinies ;)

Remember The Waltons - people still like the idea - being shattered, kids everywhere, loads of laundry, sounds great  :tired:   :huff:

Four is enough for me. We had 4 under 5 yrs - exhausting but great fun. I was still a part time counsellor, hubby full time for NFU. Much of it is a blur. Wouldnt' change it but we've only ever had as many as we can afford - afford as in financially but more importantly in time. I have a friend with 10, she struggles with time and I feel sad for the kids.

I always wanted at least 4, preferably 6 children but I have difficult pregnancies so after number three (a girl and two boys) my ex insisted on being steralised.  He didn't want any more  - found the ones we had interfered with him doing what he wanted.  Then I married my lovely OH and gained a second daughter.  Even better she had already left home.   :innocent:

People do not always understand, I worked with a male social worker who used to say to the women in bad relationships, " why are you still with him?", its also the women that gets the blame when/if she does leave :(
My husband would not use contraceptives as it was "bad" for him, I reacted badly to the pill and the coil was hard to sort out due to very bad internal scarring so, I was forced into somethng that I was quite sad about, I may not have had any more children but having that choice made for me was not nice at all :bouquet:

That is very sad Sandy.

I was absolutely sure I was done having children after number 3 so I *asked* my OH to have a vasectomey. I said very nicely that if he would like to have sex again he would have to have the chop!  :-J

Pregnancy and birth is a major undertaking for any woman and so I felt it only fair he should have to have the op afterwards! when the kids are all at school I plan to donate some eggs.

I think it is nice that people have large families but TBH once you get above about 6 or 7 then realistically some of the children are being relied upon very heavily as unpaid carers for the rest. Which I think is a denial of their own right to a childhood. So I think there is a limit of about half a dozen before it becomes unfair on the children. Even if they 'claim' to enjoy doing it, they havent known anything else to compare it with.

I agree with you Lachlanandmarcus, its taking away their childhood by expecting them to care for younger siblings. My 11 year old might be asked to make the 6 year old a drink or help with her reading homework once in a while but very rarely, we find that Milli does actually choose to care for the 'baby' of the family though and that's fine eg holding her hand if we are walking uphill etc, I think that's kind of sweet  ;)

I'm with the Chinese on this, 1 is enough, mind I've got two so that scuppers that argument..

You should have to be passed as a fit and proper person to bring up a child before your allowed to have any. That and proof you can afford to rear them without the additional 'benifit' people seem to rely on nowadays.

16 and counting bloody disgracefull.

I suspect that if the government cap child benefit so it will only be paid out on the first two children, we may see a drop in the number of children people have anyway.
Personally 3 boys were enough for me, despite being nagged at by my mum to produce a daughter.
Have to say i am a very proud mum today as my eldest has been elected to join the scottish youth parliament

castle farm, you actually have a point I make constantly, so much fuss, especially on here, is made about pups and dogs and how to look after them, but very little concern about humans.

I used to assess child care abilities of identified parents, and often wish they had not been able to have children, many also had pets too by the way, often pedigree dogs, I saw some beautiful dogs on my rounds.

We can go out and buy a reasonable dog food but as for making decisions of what food to feed your child is not so easy.

A girl I fostered was so badly disturbed with an element of brain damage, she went on to get pregnant by the step father and grandad who abused her, we were unsure who, anyway, that child had to go into care, since then I lost touch but, human rights dictated she could not be sterilised, so difficult and so sad...but life, she also killed at least 2 cats.......
