A friend of mine has decided to convert a bit of his garden into an area where he could grow his own veg.
He phoned me today to ask what he could put in now.
And i was a bit stumped!!
it's a bit late for tatties and there would be a risk of blight, but i suggested he could try them.
i said he could also try some carrotts - but best to get an early cropping variety as they can take a while to get going.
I reckon he might get some peas going, but suggested he bought some plants ready started form a garden centre. he doesn't have a greenhouse, so i reckon chillis, peppers and toms are all out (again buying ready started plants)
I don't grow any salad type veg - as it's not something I eat, but i thought he could easily get lettuce, spinach, some leafy green type things without too much hassle.
Could you put some onion sets in this late and get a crop?
I told him his best bet was to start preparing the ground for planting some brambles/rasps/strawbs in the autumn, get some garlic in in november and then some onions/shallots in January. i guess he could do some sprouts (bleuch) though.
any thoughts??

anything that is used for successional growing would be good. Lettuce, radish, carrots, beetroot, kohl rabi, small turnips, peas may just make it garlic will go in shortly and also some winter leeks can go in now

in fact, i need to put some leeks in myself!!!
Cheers

from seed: kale, lettuce, pak choi, turnips, radishes, spinach & chard (perpetual, will come back next spring), I'd give beans a shot as well, as they grow real fast in these temps. He can hope for a nice summer and buy 2 or so tomato plants for outdoors. you can get kind of jackets for them to keep them cosy. Will try to take a pic of mine, so you know what I mean.
I only just put my onion sets in as I didn't have the space before - we'll see how they turn out :&>
