Hi Dan, There's an advert on Farmers Guardian website for 2 x 8month old collies - in the Midlands. Go to www.farmersguardian.com and look under Livestock in the Classified section. The advert is somewhere around 8-10th one down the list. Mandy

if your looking for a dog first try the kennel club website, this will give you info on breed types, accredited breeders, breed standards etc etc (http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/)
a good site to find dogs for sale is: http://www.epupz.co.uk/

I assume since you're looking for a pup off working parents that you're planning to work him too. I'm realy loking forward to hearing hgow the training progresses. We have two collies, both off working stock, but they're pets - but the instinct is there, especially Meg. I wish we'd been able to train them to work - it's what they're meant for.
I think Collies are prone to an eye defect but dogs registered with the International Sheepdog Association (I think that's correct) are screened. If I knew how to google without losing this post I'd check it for you. But the ISDA will probably be more use than the KC in respect of working dogs.
Best wishes and can't wait for the photos / videos - they are exceptional dogs.
PS Please give him a proper collie name!
-
Yep he'll be working :) i've just rehomed a working bitch i had, she was brilliant when she wasnt on heat, but as soon as she came on heat, well OMG :P a different kettle of fish!!! any suggestions for names would be greatly appreciated, as we havent got a clue what to call him.

Hi Dan
I hope your collie is pretty and sturdy, email pics please, One of mine is a year old now, he is a smooth coated tri, his mother came from Wales and he is working really well. If I had enough room I think I would have another as Mist is nine now and refuses to work! she has taught Moss well though and when he gets a bit carried away and doesn't listen to the whistle, she fetches him back.
-
How exciting.......and its funny you mentioned about the 'seasons' as there was someone on another forum who had dreadful trouble with her bitch too when she came into season. She rehomed her too and I think the bitch now has charge of someones ducks/geese! ;). My little collie is Tash and she is now 15 months old. We went for lessons together during November/December last year...but now just practicing what we learned!! It's so rewarding when we get it right and we get the sheep in the pen between us. ;D ;D Love it.
Send a pic as soon as you can, because names kind of come from looking at a dog and seeing what 'fits' dont you think? :D

-
....what about "Muttly" ....although you could spell it other ways!!
-
sound good shouwting that across the field ;D I had one before poor little thing got run over, we didnt know what to call him, so he was named by me as
wait for it
DOG ;D ;D
-
Hmmmm.....could catch on :o
-
thats why i opted for a dog and not a bitch this time ;D could be quite a thing to shout bitch across the field on a sunday morning :P especially as we have a church in the middle of all our land :o

I like traditional collie names. They are usually one syllable. Ours are Tess and Meg. Meg's parents were Gyp and Mac. My uncle was a shepherd and the dogs I can remember were Jill, Meg, Tam, Fly, Roy and Craig. When I worked on the sheep farm the boss's dog was called Tan. I like Mirk and Moss, too.
Good links, Blinkers - must try the Scottish Sheepdog School - our smallholders association is hoping to visit Fergus Wood's place this summer anyway.
-
our other collie is called Tai, then theres 3 springers, hooch belle and cariad, a boxer, max, a staffi, folie(means mad in french) then a tiny chihuahua tinkerbel. fuft! i dont think i'veleft any out ;)
-
What brilliant names! I can picture them already!
Good luck with the puppy - I'm quite jealous (or maybe broody!)
-
will try and get a pik of them alltogether and get it put on here ;D
-
I think the name Fly for a collie sounds nice...
Thats a fair old collection of dogs you have there Dan
-
theyre all fly moss meg bob bill i'm sure if i called any of those i'd have all the working dogs in the area come running :o
-
muttly? mmm? would be mwtli in welsh ;D well first 24hours been and gone :D he met new born lambs close up today out in the field :) very good with them, infact to good realy, he startd to clean them up ::) right, ok ,this pup will work in the end, i'm sure ::) had to carry him out of the field, he was knackered :o well it takes it outa you watching lambs and playing ;D
-

Nothing yet ??? the worse thing is he realy respomds to being told hes a good DOG or a bad DOG :-[ and when we talk about the new dog he looks up quite happy :o
-
Why dont you call him NOG after the little Ferengi on Star Trek Deep Space Nine, at least he will respond to that, it sounds like DOG :).
-
;D one name i hadnt thought of some how :D
-
???so dont you watch DS9 then danndans? Love scifi, especially Star Trek! Anyway what did you decide on for a name in the end?
-
must admit, dont realy watch that much telly, with the four kids in the house it tends to be what ever there wachin.
Now for the new name :D
Wait for it
(i cant believe i'm actualy making hes name public knowlidge ;D so dont laff any of you, please :P)
Hes a very sensitive dog and i wouldnt want him embarrassed ::)
DOGDOG!!!!!!!!!
there you are i did it. any jokes please feel free not to pm me ;D
-
Well, that's...................different ::) :-\ ;D What's Welsh for DOGDOG ??
-
ci-ci ;D would be dogdog said same as key :P
-
Oh that's cute :D
-
mmmmmmmmm :-\
-
Oh, I LIKE Cici. That's cool.
-
:)Bless! Cici is cute isnt it? Still, I'd stay with Dogdog if thats what you've been calling him, you could add in Snoopdoggy - Dogdog sometimes and then end up calling him Snoopdog? I dont know if its the same with others but our dogs always get called lots of different things. Pataud gets called Patsy, fatsy and also teddybear (he is a Fauve de Bretagne and is a little tubby and looks just like a teddybear). Joli (the English setter) often gets called Jolwah (Franglais!) and Jolinar (of Malkshor as in Stargate - Scifi again) .
-
some pretty good variations there ;D one of ours is 8 now, and a boxer :-\ he still gets called pup sometimes, hes name is actually max ;D
Doesnt do much for hes street cred!!! :D ;D
