whats the difference between the ipad 2 and the new one with retina display (all the advertising makes a fuss about it but doesn't explain it)

they have various size memories i guess thats the equivalent of a hard drive on a laptop etc so more is better?

has anyone with a 16gb one ever run out of space?

I love out I pad 2 with 16gb, trouble is with apple ones there are loads of things that start off free but then they take money off  you so you can end up with a few £ missing from your bank as when you register you put your card details, I only have downloaded a few songs and a game or 2 due to not wanting to clock up a bill  BUT, I pad enables me to be with my Australian family for free with Facetime :)
They are something I did not know I wanted until we bought one, now, its my bestest thing!!!

Others will know more technical stuff I am sure, one thing I do not like is the auto correct and one thing my husband likes is asking SIRI questions :roflanim:
Oh, first thing we did was buy one of those very tough covers with plastic screne so the I pad can be dropped!! well worth it at around £20 but I notice cheap shops have copy ones now, not sure how wonderful they are.....

Decide how much she is worth first, David lol   :sofa:  *hidingfromNat.com*

Then decide which model of I-pad fits the 'bill.  Basically the higher the spec the better (but not always more costly), and you need to decide which is best then Google the model number to find the best price.  If you want knowledgeable advice ask Duncan (my son-in-law) he's an Apple geek. He has had 3 I-phones and 2 i-pads (all passed to Sarah and the children as he gets the latest model), one day I keep telling myself one will come my way  :excited:

I have a friend who had a perfectly good PC, then got a Laptop, then an I-pad, and has just bought an internet TV (800 bl---dy pounds) - wish she'd throw the obsolete ones in my direction. :innocent:

the ipad is great, it's not a computer but for always on and doing most things it is great. draw something is great fun :) and net surfing brilliant. the newer the better more memory is better but with a proper computer you can pick and choose music .. i have millions of hours of music :)

the i pad is quite heavy if you think she might want to read books on it via kindle app or other...  The ipad mini is FANTASTIC! Son had one for christmas (as he had saved up half towards it!) and mother and mother in law had them - All really pleased. Jealous!

whats the difference between the ipad 2 and the new one with retina display (all the advertising makes a fuss about it but doesn't explain it)

The retina display has more pixels, so graphics look 'sharper'. The display on the iPad 2 is still fab. What's the price difference? I went for the retina display, and it was only about £50 more at the time.

Mine's 16Gb and I've never come close. It's easy to delete stuff or transfer it to a PC/Mac, so if you do take a lot of video/photos, put on a massive music collection or download a stupid number of apps 16Gb will be plenty.

HTH.  :)

My I pad is the all doing bit of kit i did not know I wanted, I talk to people on it, watch TV or films, surf, play games, take great photos and mess with them, use it as a sat nave, loads of free wi fi around, then take it on the train to help pass time and of course read, papers, books or articles etc  love it to bits and yes, my 16 gb is good enough!!

It's great for surfing the net and doing odd bits but to have full benefit you really need an up- to - date pc too. We have 3 old pcs and they are no longer accepting connection so my iPad 1st edition  cannot upgrade anything until I take it to an apple shop or buy a new pc.
It doesn't support flash player and it's amazing how many programs need that!
And I cannot find a way of transferring my photos to the TAS photo competition site   :huff:  ( edited as the I pad also autocorrects without asking! )

But I still use it every night to browse the net.  :innocent:

Let me play Devil's Advocate here :knit:

I can talk to people via Skype on my pc or laptop; also watch TV or films, surf the internet, play games, download photos from my blackberry or Fuji, I have a Tomtom to get me to places and home if I get lost (much more important in my case  :eyelashes:), and a Kindle to read books on in bed.   I like the larger screen on my laptop and it's not too heavy to take on a train.  If an I-pad goes wrong you've lost all of these attributes not just one of them.  And they do go wrong.  Duncan dropped his (with the padded cover on, but it landed on a corner on the road) and had to pay £95 to replace it.  I can see the advantages but they have disadvantages too. :innocent:

However..........  I would accept a gift of a cast off from the kids, purely to try something new because I love gadgets. :excited:

I got an ipad mini for Christmas/ as a vital business expense! It's brilliant. The laptop I use for work now stays for work and email/ footling about on TAS all happens on the ipad. The mini size is perfect for me as it fits in my coat pocket for entertainment on the bus (ours all have wifi. how good is that?). I used to run out of space a lot on my phone as it was full of music and pictures but I mainly stream music on the ipad and don't take nearly so many photos on it as on the phone so small storage is no problem. Wouldn't be without one now.

I like to travel light and the I pad is ideal, every thing in one package, I would hate it to go wrong but we bought ours from  TESCO :sofa:  so, it can be replaced !

We've got a solution to that coming soon - you'll be able to email your entries from your iPad/iPhone.

our kids got us an iPad each so that we can facetime them ( we live in France). There are many good free APS and the picture/video quality is great too. We seem to be using a new application each week as we get to grips with the technology.

There are 3 of us in the house and we have 3 ipad 2s.

They do everything I want, I run my business off mine, use it for everything, I've got pages and numbers (word &excel compatible), I've got bento which is a database programme and all sorts if goodies as well, mines a 32gb one with a SIM card in it, which csts me a tenner a month.

We have an AirPrint enabled printer and can print out whatever we want which is great cos you couldn't do that at first.

I luv my ipad, I would cry if it broke.

If you buy one for her, you'll end up getting yourself one, so buy 2 ad save yourself the envy.

Falling outta love with my iPad tbh.   Simple cut paste functions are clumsy and I can't stand the way that the majority of business related docs are android based and well, the mac apps aren't really up to the same spec.  I also get cheesed off that I can't access some stuff because it is mac based - ie: my boy can't okay Moshi monsters etc  It has given me greater speed for t'internet (v much appreciated we are super slow here) but that's the only real benefit.  Santa brought us a giant laptop this Xmas and I am tending to use that more and more. Old skoool :)

We would love a wi fi printer, I did get myself a app called Pages, a word processing one, easy peasy to use, just love it BUT, would love it better with a printer!!

Sandy,  you need an AirPrint printer, mines a brother one, cost around £90, MAKE SURE IT'S AIRPRINT ENABLED otherwise doesn't work (says me who bought a Kodak hero which only printed photos) and then bought the brother, and then my daughters printer broke at uni, so she got the hero, which made me a hero, and I didn't end up wasting a shed load of cash again

Oooooooh, check it first, the Kodak app only let you print photos not pages or anything like that...

Course if you've already checked it then ignore me, I just spent loads on something that didn't work on the apps I wanted it to

I'll shut up now, thank you for bearing with me

No idea about iPads except the bizarre need to create an iTunes account before it can be used. Not sure if that is still the case?

Herself has a KindleFire and she is v v happy with it. TV, LoveFilm, Web. kindle-books and, most importantly, she handles B&B emails/bookings etc. when out and about. Also it is Android like her LG smartphone.

I've thought about getting myself one when our caravan finally sells.  How much do they cost to run as a minimum?  Alistair mentions a tenner a month but what is that for exactly?  Would it run off my internet at home or would I have to have extra?

You can probably guess I am a bit of a  :dunce: when it comes to technology.

his has a sim card so you pay like a mobile, most of them are wifi only and use the same internet as your laptop at home

One major drawback with iPads when surfing or at least posting replies on forums is if you go and check you facts on another site the wonderful eloquent reply you have already typed disappears as the page is reloaded when you tab back

Yup, that's it, you pay x£ more for it to have. SIM card facility, you get a free sim from O2, ou pay a tenner. Month and your ipad works everywhere there's a mobile signal, If there is an available wifi signal it automatically uses hat in preference to the SIM card. If you don't pay the tenner a month it just works like. Wifi version.
My version also does all the GPS type stuff as well cos its got a mobile signal, te wifi one on does this if its connected to wifi.
