Hi,
I have a boer goat who kidded 3 1/2 weeks ago. She doesnt have mastitis but dry sore teats especially where they join the bag. I have been using uddermint for a few days but she is still tender and reluctant to feed the kids which are smaller than I would like. They seem to feed more off other does than mum and whenI hold her to get her to feed them she is really agitated - also when I put on the uddermint. I have been supplementing the kids with a bottle but they are hesitant to take much at all. But now I am on verge of trying to bottle rear them as mum really doesnt seems to want to. She does have milk and is a forth kidder and has previously been a good mum.
Any advice welcome re trying to keep kids with mum and also how to get them to take bottle better - ie should I just seperate and leave say 4 hours then try to feed them or split off mum and kids and try something else.
Thanks

hi i dont own goats but we use the cow udder cream on the horses may be worth a try on the goat.

We have a togg that is prone to dry cracked skin on her udder, the last time she had kids it got quite bad and we where told to try alovera gel, it cleared up in a few days. being a milking goat we know when it starts to feel a bit dry so we give her a couple of days of alovera and it never develops now

Maybe try golden udder rather than uddermint. I use uddermint on my hands but when they are chapped it can get a bit fresh to say the least :D
Also (and I am sure you are doing this) warm the salve up to body temp before slathering it on tender boobages! I stick my bottle down me jumper before I walk to the goats if I need to use some ;)

I love uddermint for hands- always had some in the dispensary when I was in a mixed practice vets.

Yes, general udder cream (or even vaseline) rather than uddermint (udddermint is great though for clearing up lumpy bits inside the udder/teat), and also quickly test with washing up liquid for mastitits. If yes, quick shot of antibiotic needed (vet advice).

I was told uddermint dries the skin, and when using it to use ordinary uddercream every few days, uddermint did seem to make the teats feel rough and dry.

Thank you for all the advice. I have ceased udder mint and have some other cream. She is a bit happier now. Kids still with her and I can get the female to have a few hundred ml of milk at a time several times a day from a bottle. The male Sony suck so I am going to see if new cream works and if not just leave male with mum and remove female. Mum has had ab but doesn't have mastitis.

You could try using a little bit of oil for the dryness, sunflower, rape seed etc just rub a little in your hands and massage it in natural oil penetrates skin better than anything mineral based
Passed your place today goats were enjoying the fog lol
