Title: how much do you pay for a vets visit
Post by: shetlandpaul on June 20, 2009, 10:26:15 am
i had to call the vet out yesterday to have one of our lambs killed. it had a very nasty broken leg (guilty party believed to be a Shetland colt). what do you normally pay for such a visit. i was shocked by the cost £25 plus vat.
we live 1/2 hours drive from the vet and this was an emergency call.
if i remember when i was on the mainland i would have been looking at a fortune for the call out.

Sorry to hear about your lamb, I have just checked my vets bill from yesterday and a "follow up" visit was £30.83 plus VAT and my vets is 10 minutes away - and I must be one of their best customers! I think you did well.

Thankfully we don't have to call the vet out too often...but when we do its £30 + an hourly rate...

When we first started with pigs, six years ago, we had the specialist pig vet out a few times; often we were worrying too much, but on occasions we were happy to have his advice on a sick animal that needed medication...however, after a short time I realised that the vet always said the same thing, i.e. "well it could be one of about five different things..." but the treatment was usually Duphapen Fort or Tylan no matter what! Needless to say, we now carry both in the medicine cupboard and only call the vet out if the treatment administered doesen't appear to be working...granted that knowledge comes from experience, but sometimes the lessons can be bl**dy expensive!

We had a 2 year old filly who got her leg caught in electric fence. She cut herself fairly badly so the vet had to come out for 6 days to change bandages and apply cream and other things. The vet came a total of 8 times. I know it was a horse vet who treats nothing but horses but when the bill for 1,200 euro came i was a bit shocked.

Well......I called the vet a couple of weeks ago as had 3 sheep for him to check.

A)   One lamb had an eye problem and he inspected it, gave me a tube of cream and instructions on continuation of Penstrep etc.
B)   Check out the foot of Ram Lamb who had scald and I just wanted him to check it...which he did, plus I bought a bottle of L.A antibiotic
C)   Check out the face of an older ewe who had a piece of grass which had embed itself slowly through her fleece and into her jaw!!...and which I'd extracted and had treated the wound.  Having been sheared it looked a bit angry again, but he said "you're doing the right things - carry on".

All that advise, time, plus the bottle of vaccine and the tube of antibiotic eye cream ...........£47.

 ;D ;) ;D
