This may seem like a strange question but would I be better off using using newspaper or sawdust to line my brooder box?
I am picking up 10 day old chicks tomorrow and wanted to check on what you guys use and what would be safer for the chicks?

we always used to line ours with a sheet or two of news paper and a thin layer of sawdust

I always use a layer of double layer of kitchen paper for the first few days after hatching , then add a layer of wood chips - the courser stuff like used for rabbits , guinea pigs etc . I found with sawdust young chicks often tried to eat it . Some people use paper only which is fine too , but you will probably need to change it daily. Hope this helps .

By 10 days old they will need a layer of poultry sawdust ( we just use the kind that is suitable for adult poultry) as they get quite mucky and will need something to absorb the moisture to keep them healthy. We find it surprising how often they need cleaning out at this age ..... always seem to scatter food everywhere too ::)

I use empty paper feed sacks under shavings. Just makes it a bit easier when cleaning out time comes around.

They will peck at the print and eat it. We use plain kitchen roll followed by soft wood shavings. I say soft as some are rather coarse and aubiose is a definite no -blood and bandages to follow.
