If there is anyone out there interested in a nice dog the local gamekeeper is looking to re-home him. Not his dog but took it for picking up. Problem is he picks up but in big woods he has a habit of hunting too far.
Would make good pet or 1-1 gun dog if someone can put time in to get the steadiness. Lovely looking and will be registered.
This dog probably only has a week's grace then he might meet a sticky end. PM if interested and I can pass on contact details.
In case you haven't noticed in heading we are in Wiltshire, SN9

I've found making the doggy a Face book page helps.
Any other details? I Take it he's entire, any experience with visiting kids? Temperament? May know of someone..
-
If you mean 'sticky end' being shot please advise the gamekeeper that is illegal and he will be reported for animal cruelty if he does that. There is absolutely no need to go to those lengths with healthy young dog!

:o :o :o
Will ask around. How old?
It still happens. OH was visiting a local farm the other day and a couple of other farmers were there too. One of them offered to shoot a collie X that had somehow ended up there (only a pup). OH was about to say he'd have it but the farmer that we know said he was keeping it as his son liked it :relief: .

I am afraid I know of quite a few people who would put thier own dog to sleep or get rid of unwanted pups, I remember my father in law doing it when his dog got old and very recently other people my age who were farmers have done the same, particularly with ill or old dogs..I also remember a chap staying with us who had an accidental mateing with his white German Shepard, he could not sell his pups so said he would get rid of them...no it still goes on....and sometimes unwanted humans go that way as well

If you know of such a thing it is your duty to inform the police.

We all see and know things but cannot say for many reasons......
-
Scotsgirl - any news on this please? You have us all so worried! I could post on the gundog training forum if you like?
-
If I knew for certain someone had killed a dog for no other reason than it wasn't a good gundog I would be straight to teh police - even if it was my own brother!
-
I am just wondering - and am not pro-killing anything, so please don't get cross! - why unwanted calves/sheep etc can be shot but not dogs?
And - again, not pro this at all, just asking! - isn't it better to put down unwanted animals than have them going off to homes where they might not be treated well or dog's homes where they may be put down?
-
As far as I can find from a quick google its not illegal to kill your own dog in the UK assuming you can do it 'humanely' and not cause suffering which of course is illegal. reference: Animal Welfare Act 2006 where in the section on 'unnecessary suffering' includes the clause:
4. Nothing in this section applies to the destruction of an animal in an appropriate and humane manner.

Surely the post was to try and find the dog a home , lets not get lost in a debate about what is is not legal at this stage , try and remember the poor dog , if i was'nt hundreds of miles away i would have taken it in a heartbeat.
-
Agree confused.
Discussion perhaps should be for a different thread.
-
It would appear there is conflicting views on this. See below link. I think the answer is that if a dog is suffering the owner can kill it, but not for any other reason., I would most certainly report it if I knew of anyone killing a healthy dog. Yes, I agree, perhaps this should have been another thread. 'I'm out', as the Dragons say ::)

Whops, just read posts and hope know one thinks my brother would shoot a dog, no way on earth would he or any other family memebers....although my father in law would have, he was a farmer and like others have said, to him the dog would otherwise have been taken to the vet and PTS.....best way in his eyes..hes been long long gone so no good going to police about him :innocent:
I hope the dogs now rehomed, have a friend that would re home him if he was up here...but too far away.
-
Sorry to have hijacked the thread! I hope the dog finds a home - I would love to have it, but live in the muddiest, boggiest farm in Dorset - and we all know how muddy spaniels get.....!!
-
Hi the dog is still tucked up in the kennels with the others for now. As season is at a close and gk is a bit soft in his old age I should think he will stay there for a bit. Unfortunately though working dogs are costly and there is no sentiment so for those of us that keep dogs for work and mainly as pets this seems harsh but the reality is if the animal cannot fulfill it's purpose there is sometimes no choice.
I will update if I have Any news as there has been some interest.
-
....just read previous post and he is very short coated so actually wouldn't get too muddy. I have great towelling jackets for mine to dry them off.
-
I know of someone who has recently lost their dog. Very experienced owners with big garden, live in country village. I think they were starting to look for another dog- would have to be good with visiting children though. CAn ask if they would like to know more about him? They are in Devon.

:fc:
-
That would be great funky fish. He will be fine with children I think and we'll socialised. He was very good when he met my dogs
-
There is no reason to kill a healthy dog - someone somewhere will take it in. There are quite a few spaniel rescues, one I have already mentioned. Scotsgirl if you become worried about this dogs future please pm me and I will get you lots of contact details, lets ensure a happy future for this liitle dog.
-
I'll double check they are interested and then pm the details x

How old is the dog? Is he docked? I might be interested (though it's a long way away)
-
I will try and find out tomorrow how old he is and registration info. He is docked and been in working homes. Original owner has given up most of his shooting I believe and wasn't the best at looking after his dogs. He is very biddable when out with the pack I think he just gets carried away on the picking up and forgets to stop.
-
Any clue as to how he is with cats.. Another awesome home has come up- very experienced with spaniels, but she has cats..

our knackerman shoots working dogs if they are old etc.
