Hello from a very snowy Swansea! For those in the know, its quite a rare event as we usually get the rain! :raining:
My OH and I moved here 8 years ago, bought our house which needed extensive renovation, with no intention of buying a smallholding, although, tbh, chickens and geese soon followed! My nearest neighbour offered to sell us 20 acres next to our house, so last Christmas we became somewhat overwhelmed landowners! Last year we just had a local farmer take the hay off, but then in September ventured into raising a couple of Tamworths (many thanks to Liz at Tudfyl Tamworths for two fab little weaners!) So now we have the bug! Stock proof fencing and ploughing by two more Tamworths first, then sheep (Ryelands or Southdowns?) Loads of ideas and would love to hear from others especially those in South Wales! Also lost my Chinese goose last week to a fox, so on the lookout for another for my lonely gander.

Hello and welcome from Carmarthenshire.
Wow 20 acres, lucky you.
I started my smallholding adventure in Feb of last year and am loving it. I have 5 Ryeland sheep, 4 of which I hope are in lamb so will be watching out for the patter of tiny feet mid March.

I was looking at Ryelands too! They seem very popular on here. A friend of mine has offered to sell me some Texels at cost but Im not sure they are the breed for us, he seems to get an awful lot of problems with feet and eyes. Another friend in north Wales has offered some Southdowns which seem much more appropriate. Any advice much welcomed. Do I purchase ewe lambs and then let them lamb the following year or 2?

Hi Kaz,
Certainly interested! Another forum member who lives near has offered to let us see some "up close" and have a chat, so if after that we are keen, I'll get in touch, if that's ok?
