Title: Small things make me smile
Post by: Lostlambs on January 21, 2013, 12:07:51 pm
It's been brutally cold here again, with the windchill yesterday -42. Of course I started  lambing this last week. 3 sets of twins so far and lost one to the cold but the rest are up and filling out. Being so cold everyone is given access to the barn except the rams who have their own sheds. One of those weeks I think I'm nuts for living in this climate-water bowl froze up,tractor stuck(on the well power cord so no water) can't move bales into pens because of snowdrifts so hand forking the hay. Last night went out to check everybody and they're all settled in with one of my Shetland ewes standing on my angus cow( who's laying down) preparing a warm spot to curl up on. Wish I had my camera. It's the small moments that make it worthwhile ;D

Hi Lostlambs    I have been wondering how you are coping up there - brrr  :cold: :cold: :cold:

Wonderful about the ewe on the cow.  Lambs do it with their mums, so maybe she thinks the cow is a supermum  ;D

Stay warm and safe

it's gone up to -25 windchill still -36 this morning but supposed to break by the weekend. A nice change if it gets here. My pygmy nanny had triplets night before last and all 3 doing good so far :fc: .My lambies are bouncing around in their pens so coming along.Tried to double up 2 moms in 1 larger pen but didn't go well with the moms bashing each other so all pens are full right now.  Waiting for 9 more that a escaped ram caught last fall-he was a real busy boy when he jumped the fence. I haven't tailed or ringed the lambs yet but will have to soon as I didn't want to add more stress than the cold. Probably leave the boys intact as they will go out early this summer. I must be getting used to the cold, yesterdays -24 didn't feel to bad

Brrrrrr  :cold: - glad you are getting acclimatised to it.

I know what it's like getting everyone backed up in the lambing shed when conditions aren't right for putting them out.  In our case, we started getting problems with infections running from pen to pen, a lot of lambs got watery mouth.  Now we use Orajet or similar as a routine for newborns who will be in the shed, just in case the weather turns.

Are temperatures likely to rise soon, or is this normal for the time of year?
