Title: Some nice snowy pics
Post by: goosepimple on January 13, 2013, 07:04:43 pm
Not for any other reason than it's nice to look at pics occasionally:

My guest house. It was built up on the summer grazing pastures in the forests in the 18th century but was dismantled and rebuilt on the farm in 1910.

It's fine in pictures but I don't like the reality.

Wish I had taken the camera with us on a dog walk, the trees looks so pretty!!

O.K. here is the neighbours Christmas tree. They didn't even have to dig it up.(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-nVHO9hzGAIo/UNSllB3PKEI/AAAAAAAAN38/pXH6rQ1kMWM/s576/IMG_8442.JPG?gl=SE)

Great pics both of you.
GP - looks like that you have a great set up. Can you tell us about the water the birds are on? A stream I guess or did you dig out the pond area?
We would luv to dig out a pond for our little stream to fill and flow thru but cattle graze just downstream.

It's a mill pond Martin, it was here when we came although we let it dry up and we dug it out to desilt it.  It has sluice gates so we can divert the flow through.  The river is called the Boondreigh River and it has been quite high this year with all the rain, it flows into the River Leader, which is a big river that eventually goes to the bigger River Tweed.  The pond is fed in a loop from the river.  The base of it is gravel and stones which were there already.  We're going to get a little boat for it but we need it to be deeper which isn't a problem, we just need to find time to replace some of the sluice gates, a job a little down the list yet.  We get swans on the pond and otter in the river and last year we had kingfisher and salmon which leap in September to get upstream.  We have a group of mill buildings here, the usual mill set up - mill with wheel, millers house, a cottage and a kiln house which is semi-derelict at the moment - next year's plan.  the site is good though, enormous tumbling bedrock everywhere so it looks dramatic.

All sounds idillic and it is, it's just all very much a work in progress and believe me, it continues to have it's stressful moments.  I think about selling it all every week I think, but I know we'll get over that stage.  Eventually ...   ::)

PS  Jaykay managed to secure a bit of a beck running through her site so she can keep ducks and geese which is a good idea, she may have some tips.

Wow - looks and sounds marvellous GP. It may well be dam hardwork but I am sure you get such pleasure and satisfaction with each project you complete. Just imagine how dull life would be if you could not stretch your imagination and pick off the work when it suits.
We moved some granite blocks (again) today becuase they were obstructing the path of a tractor. After we knocked all the snow off and carted them back to near the house Chris suggested I build a walled raised terrace ( just 10 meters from where the granite blocks came from  :excited: ).
Would love to see the otters!!

They're all Muscovy ducks Beeducked, mum (Mrs Grey) in the back and some of her kiddies in the foreground.  The one you like and others are for sale, posted in Marketplace today.  They're all cute and will eat out of your hand.

Ooh, no funny knobbly bits on his face though!

Keep thinking about muscovies but probably need to keep down numbers especially for the ground this time of year. Planning on working out a way of letting the ducks onto our field without letting the sheep into the orchard and can then have a few more. :excited:

Then again have to fix the fence to our neighbour's field (with pond) so we don't have to keep fishing the ducks out. They have discovered that if they wiggle hard enough they can get through the stock fencing but it is magic, one way fencing as the holes are much smaller on the other side so they can never get back!

Muscovies roost so you have to leave them to it really - some nice high branches or a shed roof top and you should be fine.  Go on, you know you want some  ;D

Now that's just mean, tempting me like that!

Ha! Thought of a defence: if they can fly and roost then my attempts to reinforce the fence are futile as they will just fly over into next door's pond! :innocent:

Will keep telling myself that and no posting any more cute pics.
