Title: Puppy Teeth
Post by: thestephens on January 11, 2013, 06:35:06 pm
Maggie, our 6 month old Bassett has still quite a few of her baby teeth and her adult teeth all growing together including her lower canines, should we be worried, they baby ones are still not loose!

At one time vets would just leave baby teeth alone and many dogs lived happily with them. However, the thought now is that leaving them in can cause damage to the roots of the adult teeth replacing them.
It the adult tooth is right through, speak to your vet at your next visit to find out their protocol on this.

I agree, your vet will advise.  If they still look pretty tight they may decide to remove the baby ones but they might need to take an x-ray to be sure which ones have the correct adult roots.  Does she get bones and hard (ish - depending on breed) toys to chew?

Our vet mentioned something about this when I took Murphy in for a check up. She said to hold off of him being castrated till 6 months so that while he is under the GA they can remove any puppy molars that are still in situ alongside new adult ones as its common for terriers not to lose them naturally? (he's half terrier half collie or samoyed)
I think it sounds like it could be a breed anomally with certain types!
