Title: Fires in Austrailia, the worse is over...I hope
Post by: happygolucky on January 07, 2013, 10:04:57 pm
I am concerned that its getting serious concerning fire risk where my daughters are in Australia, although they are a long way from each other they are both in NSW, they are ready for an emergency evacuation as its getting very hot and windy, I so wish at times like these a prayer or something would help keep them safe....I think there are others on here from Australia as well!!!
Its certainly one extreme to another, floods, winds and now fires!!

So sorry you have this worry.  I will be praying for them and all the others caught up in this horror.  My son is in Australia but the other side, in Perth.  I know how hopeless you feel when you are too far to do anything.

Hope all is fine with your daughters, it must be so worrying being so far away. Just watching it now on the news  :o The country seems very well prepared as a whole, I think this country would go to pieces, we are bad enough with a sprinkle of snow in some counties.

Keep us posted on their safety  :fc:

I was in Melbourne four years ago when they had fires there. Folk seemed to have everything well prepared but it was an ordeal for them.
I'm sure we're all praying for your girls, Happygolucky, as well as all the others in their troubles.

My daughters are in a high risk area of NSW, on fire alert.....its so hot and windy a fire can start anytime, I think at least they have a good escape route...my daughter gets her horse soon so hope the heatwave has subsided by then, then they are getting live stock, it must be hard for farmers!

it all seems to have cooled down, that's good, not sure I could cope itch those. Temperatures,  I would be scared if I lived there and also kept livestock......my son in law works for a farmer in his building business so they also have land and animals, 2 sheep so far and 1 horse for now...oh and a dog but, I bet they soon will have a Menagerie.....thanks folks for the support

The worse part is not being able to afford to visit, thier youngest sister is in the same boat, the only one who visits all the time is her dad, my X and I get a bit of the green eyed monster.....still, once we have sold we can save  :fc:
They both are having the life they dreamed of, my middle daughter is on here, they love anything to do with farming, countryside etc and have landed on thier feet, they have a wonderful house and land to do up and have bought it cheaply from my son in laws boss, they have a farm up the track from them, then, they have made loads of friends already and go fishing and shooting and now my daughters dream has come true, buying a horse, they will buy another soon too....I am so pleased. THe other older daughter is sucsessful in her industry too. cosmetic science, like me she is a poor speller but writes a lot of articles for a good living and is a consultant for cosmetic products and many more things, her husband works in a bike shop and cycles all the time, so they both found thier dream!!

She may have to leave  her animals........just hope its not going to come to that!! not sure about my other daughter as she is on a business trip!

The fire is on the Decca Forest trail and is heading for Eucaliptus trees and only 25 miles from them!! I just am in shock and hope they are all going to be ok!!

I do hope they'll be OK, there is a lot of help so I am sure they will be.  I read one report of stables being evacuated and because they couldn't get all of their horses away at once they put them in the swimming pool till they could go back for them.

Not heard from them all as yet but the nearby fires are still out of controls, the Deccan Forest trail......both daughters are near high fire risk areas..."yesterday I felt sick with worry, I am sure they would be able to escape but they are at risk of loosening their home and animals......although there must be lots more farmers devastated by loss of their livestock.........It's a tense time.......

Well, the fire is still out of controle but my daughter says that its heading for a dam so that should stop it before it gets to the huge forest near where they are........,must be upsetting for all the people with livestock....I saw this morning that some fire was at danger level but now its under controle, they are safe, thankfuly...still not out the woods as the storms spark up the fires and they are next to a huge forest, some is owned by a friend so my son in law now goes shooting thier (lucky man)

Yes, there are only a few times when  all of them are OK with no problems....or I have a prob and they are OK......I wish they or I were nearer but I have no interest in going to Austraila, I also have my youngest in the UK and its hard enough to get to see her.
I was worried so much this morning as a red warning sign was on the map nearish to them....thankfuly its back to caution rather than warning!!

I am in shock, 2 of my 3 daughters are in Australia as well as all my grandchildren and in high fire risk areas, my eldest is now in a major fire in Springwood, not sure if its her house that's burnt down or across the road,  but they are safe but houses around them have gone...I am soo very scared I dare not move from the computer...makes trivial stuff...well trivial !

I love living here in Scotland, its beautiful and too wet to get forest fires and the cooler weather suits me as I get too hot, they all would love me to move to Australia but I am not keen on the temperatures, the dangerous wild life, the remoteness of everywhere or the risks of fires......I am actually feeling sick with worry, at least they should be safe, as well as their pets, they have 3 dogs and goodness knows how many guinea pigs, not sure if they have taken them with them in the car  though...My daughter was in the same position as the lady in the film, had no idea where her daughters, my granddaughters were, they are all together now though

 Its sheer hell when you feel so helpless when knowing your children are in potential danger.  I knew my eldest daughter was likely to be in Kings Cross on 7/7 when the bombs went off.  All the phone services were blocked and I was stuck on a coach with a load of sixth formers on a trip heading for London with no way of finding out if my little girl was safe.  The only way we knew of the situation was when one of the students, the daughter of a police officer, had a call from her father asking to speak to the head of the sixth form who was on the coach with us. Dealing with growing teenage hysteria on the coach whilst trying to keep myself calm was hell.  Thankfully my daughter had passed through Kings Cross underground ten minutes before the bombs went off and was safe.  I can really empathise with you HGL and pray that your daughters and their families keep safe.  Regardless of how old they are you never lose that feeling you need to protect.

There are some very hurtful comments on those blogs about why people stay beside the Blue Mountains when it is so dangerous.  I can understand people who have lived there all their lives and others whose families are well rooted there, but do you know why Rebecca and Amanda chose to live in that area?

My daughters are all optimists and full of fun, that's good, but. the oldest lives in the Blue mountains and is now very much at risk of loosing her home, here children are getting very jumpy as all they can see and smell is thick smoke.  Not heard from them this our last night and there this morning, they may have their power cut off soon. I suppose the only consolation is, they are prepared and they are in a community that's going to be affected in the same way. .a bit like any disaster........I am finding it hard to function properly at the moment.......Thanks for the support, I need as many distractions as possible!!

I'm so glad they have moved out.  I see that the firefighters merged two areas of fire in order to stop it spreading to a third.  You never know, it may not reach their home.  But even so, as John says, home is family not a building.
Wipe the tears, Amanda and your granddaughter are safe.

I've been following this anxiously. I was in Victoria the year after Ash Wednesday (that was 1983). I still remember seeing the scorched trees, although it was amazing how soon nature was able to recover. But I met people who'd lost not just property and livestock, but also members of the family...

Glad to hear your family is safe now. The rest will be ok in time.

They have now been allowed back home as the wind has dropped that threatened to shift a big fire towards them, well. at least they are ready, they need to be in their home to help fight small embers catching alight etc and also inevitably there are looters. this is just the beginning of the fire season, that concerns me.......it's all go down under, the tears I shed last night helped me deal with my emotions as a mum, I know just how much my daughters try to protect me from knowing just how bad they feel, sometimes a few tears relieve the tension, I feel much better today but know how real the situation is....

Oh Sandy, I'm glad they have been able to go home but I do feel for you. My children also don't tell me things if they think I'll worry. Then I worry about what they are not telling me.

Mind you, its also visa versa gave strict instructions last time I went into hospital, due to the panic that ensued after the fist time I went in. They are back in their home as its better to have people helping keep the fires down, they have things they have to do such as hose the house down all the time, but the fires still pose a  huge risk, they had to leave as the wind was strong and changed direction, I usually hear from my daughter around 10pm so I will get a better idea and update, not sure if anyone is able to go to work either and  hope they put the fires out soon.....the Blue Mountains will look very sad.......

Oh, only just caught up with your thread again HGL. Having seen the reports on the news I can understand why you needed to shed those tears last night.  I do hope your daughters have positive news for you this evening so that you may be able to get a good night's sleep without even more worry.  Thinking of you and your family.

just been chatting my daughter, they are all very drained as its  hard to get away or sleep, but they are back in their home, the community spirit is immense and everyone is helping each other, they have many homeless friends and the place is thick with smoke and helicopters above all the time, they were glad to get out for the day but they are not past being at risk, it was bad yesterday as the fire threatened to turn their way, only 2 miles from them........I feel better today, although other issues also in Australia concerned both of us as much......not much to do but worry and waite

My daughter and grand daughters are staying away from the Blue mountains today as its getting too stressful and no one is getting much sleep, they took their Guinea pigs with them too, so they are now safe in a new temp home,  however my son in law has stayed behind to help hose down the house and was able to go to work today, hope things calm down soon. :fc:

Glad they are safe but hope the fires are put out soon. It sounds like an excellent community there but your mind will be easier knowing they are out of danger.
