Title: Who/where do Private Kill for Pigs?
Post by: Pony-n-trap on January 03, 2013, 11:49:59 am
in North East Scotland, Aberdeenshire?  We used to take ours to Scotch Premier in Inverurie but have heard that they are not doing private kill anymore for pigs, they havent had the courtesy to let us know, so, we now have 4 gilts about 4 weeks away from slaughter and we dont know where to take them.
Any suggestions, gratefully received!

Rhinds of Elgin still do them (I think) - now run by Dunbia.

Rhinds are helpful, we used them before for some pigs & recently for a steer.

Hope this helps

According to the website, Millers of Speyside at Grantown on Spey also still do private kill pigs (probably only a day a week tho) - worth ringing to check if they are convenient for you.
Inveruries abbatoir wont have pigs in future as they are planning to replace both existing abbatoirs with a new one, and that will be cattle and sheep only according to what Ive read.

I do think it is a crappy welfare situation developing with the distances people are starting to have to take animals just to find a slaughter house.

Put this into your search engine

Look for all the Scottish ones in your area and contact them .

we are aberdeenshire but use millers of speyside, never get a reply from premier! Only thing is they dont butcher at millers anymore but they can put you in contact with local butchers, we have 3 saddlebacks booked in for Thursday (their private kill day) and then the butcher will pick the meat up and butcher/pack for us, will tell you how we get on.

Scotbeef have taken over both Mathers and Premier meat in Inverurie and only take cattle and sheep.

Rhinds of Elgin and Millers both take pigs of private kills.

We phoned Rhinds of Elgin yesterday and they said for private kills it is £50 for ether sheep or pigs!

That is a price rise of around 100%, sad day for the smallholder raising some pork for family & friends.

Thank you so much for all your comments and suggestions as to who will do private kills, I have complained hugely to Scotbeef, especially after they 'lost' 3 of our pigs last year, am currently composing a letter to send to, well, anywhere I can think of, will let you know when they reply but it looks like this lot will be the last lot.
So much for keeping Britain Farming, or, Supporting Smallholders eh.........
