Title: Hello from Herts/Essex!
Post by: edessex on January 02, 2013, 05:09:58 pm
Thought I'd introduce myself before I start asking loads of questions!

I live pretty much on the Hertfordshire / Essex border, near Stansted Airport.  I started to keep (and breed) chickens about 18-24 months ago, and also started on quails and turkeys last year.

By trade I'm a horticulturist, so the animals I keep are private, for pets / eggs mainly, but will also be selling / swapping poultry and / or eggs this year.  I'm also planning to take on a couple of goats and some smaller breed pigs.

Hi from East Yorkshire

We are also fairly new to this site, there is loads of info.

Our aim is to keep chickens, ducks, goats, alpacas and a large veg/fruit garden but know very little, so we are starting slowly with chickens next year so you may be able to help me out with a few hints and tips.  My area of expertise is tax, so any business/ tax questions happy to help.

Hi from North Yorkshire,
see you want piggies, lots of rare pig breeders your neck of the woods but theres no such thing really as a small pig breed, possibly Berkshires might qualify. Please don't be taken in by so called micro pigs theres no such thing! They grow just like normal ones!
Anyway whatever you decide i'm sure you'll enjoy keeping them, always loads of advice and opinion in the pig forum part of TAS
all the best

I've heard the stories of people being sold piglets as micro-pigs, expecting them not to get any bigger!

The breed we are interested in at the moment is the Kunekune pigs, which as far as I know is one of the smaller pig breeds, although they are still knee high!

Kunies are lovely.  Not got any myself but know people who have (on here) and would have some if I was able to.  I just have my three (shortly to be two) pure Sanaans.  Love my goats, but you can probably guess that by my forum name.   ;D
