Title: Cost of straw
Post by: The Woodsiders on December 18, 2012, 06:20:30 pm
Hi, can anyone let me know what they are currently paying for a bale of straw, not the huge bales but the ones that can be easily lifted approx. 2ft x 1.5ft x 3ft. (sorry only do British) I think I may be paying a bit over the odds.
Many thanks

2500 Kg bale of straw from our neighbour cost us 1 rabbit, blood of 2 pigs and some fat ( for black pudding), 2 doz duck eggs ( for his mum) and 2 ducks. Not sure how much that works out to be though.

Im paying £2 if I collect for small bales of oat straw - not sure whether quality will be bedding only for non greedy horse or whether it will be usable for feed for fatty lami prone as I used oat straw for last year. but am happy with either for this cost. Reason quality might be an issue is it is rebaled big bales and this year the harvest has been appalling.

That sounds on the steep side if you are collecting - would expect max £3 ish for collected.

For small bale wheat straw i pay £1.50 bale collected but if you're in a horsey area expect it to be dearer. I normally swap half a pig for 12 big heston bales and buy in approx 30 small bales (i like the small ones for propping up poorly pigs, taking to shows, building wind shelters & for piglets to play on when they're stuck in by the weather etc.

£8 for a mini heston bale of straw, not sure how much it weighs, maybe 100-150 kilo

Cant get hold of conventional bale straw but would use it too quick anyway

£2.20 delivered here in the Forest of Dean.  But it is very short, so less insulating than usual.  We could only have 100 of our pre-ordered 130 as the farmer (one of the main straw providers in the area) was so short this year.  He didn't manage to make any hay at all, either!

Hay was cheap this year from another source, but is not great quality.  We paid £1.50 a bale, for 60 bales collected, but have been offered a further 60 for free just so that farmer can reaach the back of his garage and get his winter tyres out  :D

So, our pigs are having hay put into the mudbaths that have developed in their new runs too, just to help give them better footing in some areas.  Its nice to be able to be freely generous with it for them in such hideous weather.
