Title: What to feed turkeys
Post by: graham-j on December 18, 2012, 08:14:59 am
Hi,I have several turkeys that haven't put one enough weight, this was my first try with turkeys and I hatched them late in July. They are pure breed bronze,I am going to keeping them for easter.
My question is what to feed them until then.
They were fed on turkey chick crumb 26%,then turkey grower 21% protein until week 16 and then a finishing/fattening diet 16% protein.
Do I keep them on finishers,go back to turkey growers or switch to ordinary growers pellets for chickens.
I also have a stag and two hens that I wish to keep long term what is the best feed for them.

Graham.

Mine are finished on mixed corn with just enough veg oil to make it lightly coated if I don't feel they are gaining weight enough.

Layers pellets would probably do the job but they might start to get a bit tough by Easter, especially the stags.  The feed conversion rate in turkeys is very good when they're young but tails right off, so feed tends to turn into fat in an older bird, rather than frame and flesh.
