Title: In kid or not?
Post by: firemansam on December 12, 2012, 01:42:11 pm
My Pygmy nanny had been running with a billy for a month before I aquired her. At what point should signs become obvious that she is in kid?
I got her the 1st week in sept so she could be 3-4 months now. ???

Hi Firemansam - if she is in kid then you should notice that she doesn't come into season, then at four months you should see a difference in how her 2 sides look - looking at her (face on) the right is the rumen and should be a smooth bump to the tail, the right side is the kids bump and that is a pronounced bump.

Obviously all goats are a slightly different shape and some are more pronounced than other's.

Our Billy has been seen covering our other nanny but I have never seen him showing Polly any attention. But I cant say that I have noticed any change in her shape.

So possibly she's not even been in season yet although I would have though she would have been by now especially with a Billy about. Is this her first time with the Billy? Is she quite small? One of our girls who is quite long in the body doesn't change shape as much as the others.

she is bigger than our billy and smaller than our other nanny, so average for a pygmy, she is 18 months old and has not kidded before.
I am expecting her to be in kid but impatiently waiting for some signs

Having the Billy around you should see signs when she is in season - tail wagging, calling, slightly off feed and I'm sure there's more but those are what I look out for.

If I was you I would take it she was in kid and as she's not particularly big we could say possibly one kid, I am guessing your billy is still in the same paddock with Polly so if she did come into season he would do the deed and if she's in kid things should just continue.

My youngest girl (18 months) is quite small but I know she didn't come back into season after being with the billy so I am thinking one kid for her.

Hope all goes well for you - keep us informed with lots of pictures  :fc:
