This new law from what I understand is we now cant sell any scrap metal to scrap yards for cash any more in england & wales >:( but does this also include cars & whether if they recorded it could we be paid via cheques or anything? could someone please expand on this as it was a bit confusing & I only heard a bit of it on the news yesterday. I'm sorry but I don't know about anyone else but I think its a pretty stupid annoying law to have been put in place for genuine people like farmers & people in the country who do want to get rid of old metal littering up the place for a bit of cash - I can understand why they've done it to try & cut down on metal theft but surely there could have been talks & other options before this. x

I think its only the cash bit ;D . So they need ID and bank account, which is no bother if it helps stop scumbags stealing metal (we once had a house stripped of copper twice whilst we were having central heating installed, so I'm all for regulation!!) I regularly weigh in stuff (there is about 20 years of waste buried on our smallholding!) and allready have to provide ID, and I thought it strange that the cash thing was still going on 2 weeks ago, I thought it had allready changed. you can still scrap stuff, but you need to provide id and you are paid with a cheque so need a bank account.

apparently some scrappies are setting up cheque cashing 'shops' next door to the yard....run by them....so the dodgies will still get cash :(

We sold some scrap yesterday and got cash back. We had heard of the law but didn't realise it was just england and wale. We are in scotland, so guess it doesn't apply here.

I think it's coming to Scotland - 14th of December is the cut off date I think. There's no way we'll get all ours away by then ::) :innocent:

I think its a good idea - when you read of the churches and schools being stripped of lead and artworks being pinched - I suppose the thieves will just move onto another thing though!

Heard on the radio about 2 blokes who stole a Henry Moore sculpture worth 500k. £46 scrap value, you got to laugh! they got 12 months each! Still get paid just getting a bit more of a paper trail to try and stop some of the illeagel trading.

I heard this aswell, makes you laugh when it's these people a the ones behind the thefts.

as far as im aware, its not that easy to get nfa status, if you claim that you have to still provide ID which is then checked on.
nfa does not mean you dont have to provide id. just that your officially homeless.

the effect it could have is that genuinely poor people, who dont have access to a bank account could be hit. i know a few like that, salt of the earth types, everything done in cash. but i think overall its a good idea. lots of people use cash/chequeing shops for genuine reasons, i have done myself a few years back.
it wont prevent 'professional' criminals however, who will just use some scrote to weigh it in for them. that or melt it down and sell on the blackmarket.
