Its nearly the time of year for planting garlic again so I'm trying to find a big bag of bulbs. Most places seem to sell them in expensive packs of two or three bulbs. Last year I got a 5kg bag from SfS but they seem not to have any this year - any recommendations for other suppliers?
Thanks,
Ben

www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk (http://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk). Is where I got mine last year. Very reliable.
-
I bought mine this year from http://www.reallygarlicky.co.uk/garlic (http://www.reallygarlicky.co.uk/garlic) and although I only bought a few I think I remember reading somewhere they do supply commercial growers, so it might be worth getting in touch with them :)

its worth selecting your own cloves from the last harvest to use as your next. just pick the biggest.
-
Some where in the site there are advertizer who sell them .. can't think where at the minute but last year several contacted me when i put up a garlic relatd post. Prices seemed good as well .
-
Out of interest - what would be a good price?
I bought a kilo of violet garlic off the market - works out about 180 bulbs for next year.

Hi,
Sorry not been on here for a while - so Happy New Year!
We will be loading Garlic to the site soon in 5Kg Bags.
While Im here we have now added the 2013 selection of Seed Potatoes and Onion Sets, aiming to ship by the end of the month.
But be warned, due to the very bad weather last year, availability this year is limited and on a first come first served basis.
Just follow the SfS link at the bottom of any TAS page to take a look.
Many thanks
-
thanks but how much a kg do you charge for garlic?
-
This years prices have not been finalised yet - but last year the price was £25 + delivery for a 5Kg net of bulbs - thats an awful lot of single cloves when split !
Should be able to give a price in the next week or so.
Many thanks

yep a 5 kg bag of garlic when split into cloves could give you 800 plants based on how many bulbs I got from half a kg last year.
Are you really going to sell in 5kg bags and should we not have planted garlic by now?
-
5 kilo = 800 plants ? Is that all ?
A garlic bulb will provide between 8 - 12 or so cloves . So using the lower number that would be 100 bulbs , 100 x 8 = 800 cloves/plants , is that all 5 kilo equals ?
I grew what i thought was 150 plants last year , planted in late March , and ended up with over 180 bulbs , some provided double or triple bulbs . They were on the small side , but late planting and the strange weather played their part in that .
I don't have any scales so have no idea of weight , but would have thought 5 kilo would give more than that ?
Not picking here , just have no idea of how the weight would work out .
Not doing kilo's doesn't help mind !

Sounds like you have small bulbs Rusty ;D .
I reckon 20 heads of large garlic is about a kg so your sums are good. I plant violet garlic but maybe the elephant garlic would yield fewer heads but a good weight.
Either way there is only so much garlic a house can use and I suspect 5kg of cloves planted out is too much for most of us.
-
Cheers Mak ,
i am , i think , a heavy garlic user . I go through about 9 cloves per day , no problems with vampires getting me !
So i will be planting a lot this year . Been so wet here , just no way i could get them in the ground in December , so asap will have to do .

Don't forget that Elephant Garlic is not garlic but a type of leek. ;)

Elephant garlic - Having seen it sold as garlic and found it on "cultivation" sites it seems this milder flavour of garlic that it has is preffered by some but many thanks for correcting me. Just had a look on Wikipedia too ( worth a look). :-J

The only reason I know this is that I grew it many years ago when I first saw it, and was so disappointed when I used it that I looked it all up, and learned about the difference.
As they say folk who don't like garlic find it more pleasant - but I like garlic :eyelashes:
-
If enough people expressed an interest in 1kG bags then we would be prepared to split bags.
Thanks

So, I'm starting looking for bulk garlic again this year (a bit earlier this time) - any one know where I can get ~5kgs at a decent price?

J Parker's wholesale, 5kg of Thermidor for £32:
http://www.dutchbulbs.co.uk/plant-1002264-gd-1/garlic-thermidrome-5kg/ (http://www.dutchbulbs.co.uk/plant-1002264-gd-1/garlic-thermidrome-5kg/)
If that's all you're buying the extras take it up to about £44.
The Organic Catalog also sell a couple of varieties in 5kg bags:

Really garlicy sell theirs at 80p each and reckon 25 to a kilo including postage so that works out at £20 per kilo including postage. Might do them even cheaper if you emailed them?

Toulouse garlic is 4.50 € a kg off a seller who comes for the large monthly market here. It has a slight violet tinge to the skins and I think quite a different taste to the bog standard supermarket bulbs from spain etc. For a very short period the supermarkets sell smoked Toulouse garlic - the shop smells a bit funky and I have yet to try it.
Next time I go to the post office I will ask the cost of posting a kg to the UK in case I can make a few bob by selling it on ;D ;D

I might have been up for some of that smoked garlic, but I had an offer on the house today. Not the best of offers but we will see.
