Title: Mealworm Farm
Post by: suziequeue on November 24, 2012, 07:42:14 am
I have just started my mealworm farm to provide live mealworms for the chickens over the winter. :hungry: :hungry:

I have started mine on hypergrow pig nuts as we have a sack left over when the pigs went a couple of weeks ago.

Does anybody else grow mealworms?

That was really interesting. When I have the space I'll watch that again

That was very interesting Suziequeue.
Let us know how you get on with it.
I can handle the mealworms but not sure about the beetles.

That is a good idea. Some for the chucks and some for the robins.

Thanks for posting the link.

Hey, that's a great idea! I've got a couple of bags of mouldy chick crumb that would keep a mealworm farm going for ages!  I'm just not sure I can be bothered with the hassle.

My other thought was to set up a vermicomposter and feed the excess wurms to the hens. It's wierd though - when we used to keep our hens in a small run, they'd go mad for a juicy earthworm. However, now they are free range, they turn their beaks up at them  :huff: . Has anybody else had that problem? (It's lucky our ducks aren't so discerning!  ;D )
