I went out this afternoon with scraps for the birds to notice that my legbar male was hanging away fromt he group, hiding under the hedge looking totally miserable! - for him this isnt uncommon as he is the under dog, i have a bantam male that is ruleing the roost for the time being as i am getting new runs put up at the moment and i have just had a large group of birds as opposed to two seperate ones.
usually a hand feed and a cuddle sorts him out - but as i attempted to catch hold of the bugger, it was obvious something wasnt right, he kept running into things and was generally very clumsy. eventually got hold of him.
he has a large solid swelling just behind his right eye, meaning his eye cannot open and is dischargeing a clear runny liquid. i've wiped him down with some saline solution and evicted the rabbits to keep him isolated.
without rushing off to the vets (if i have to i will) is there anything else i can try?
i shall get some pictures tomorrow in daylight

Hi i have a silver spangled hamburg cockerel that sounds like he got same thing over last couple of days swelling has gone down abit but no better or worse. could it be weather related?
-
He could have been pecked by the other if it is just weeping as sounds like the cause,if foamy-Infectious Coryza, does it smell horrid at all?
-
My chap is now on own have been treating as though infection but no worse or better and no smell, i am wondering weather he has been pecked and eye damaged beyond repair and if they can reabsorb the damaged eye as known of a few our animals that can, it just very odd as eating drinking ect all ok.

Sounds as though the bantam cockerel has got a claw/beak into his eye. Nothing you can do really, just keep a look out for infection.

it seems like a waiting game! thanks guys i'll just sit and ride this one out and see where it goes from here.
