Title: overdue sow
Post by: Tricky Trev on November 21, 2012, 07:39:30 pm
As posted earlier we have a sow due last Saturday we have checked our dates with deerpark AI and they are spot on .She is OK eating drinking and everything else. should we be having vet out are leave it a bit longer? ( we are getting worried)

I found differing advice on gestation periods so I dont think farrowing can be timed as such.  When we we worried about our first sow being overdue all of the old pig people I spoke to locally just said not to worry and that, things don't work so precisely anyway. I know this goes against what is written, but some of these people had looked after 200 sows (she described herself as a pigwife :) ) and another had a herd of 1700.
If she is happy in herself then she's got to be OK, surely?

I have always thought that if she goes past ten days overdue then it wasnt good, but anything under that was fine.

Cant remember where that came from though  :pig: :pig:

They used to tell us that pig pregnancy is *around* 114 days, but many things like body condition, number of piglets and even the season can influence that. Generally, if she looks and acts ok, keeps eating and has not temperature/depressed behaviour, she should be fine and get on by herself.
If any of the above happen or if she has foul discharge, call the vet asap as some of the piglets might have died at the front and blocking the other ones at the back, preventing birth of those still alive. Also if they rot, it won't be good for her - but you'd notice she would be so sick.

You could always call the vet just for a scan to check they are still alive.

Trev we've had sows upto 7 days late so no panic yet. Just keep an eye on her as the others say so long as she is happy, eating, drinking & pooing ok let nature take its course. Any sign of temp or discharge vet asap.
She'll start nesting soon hopefully, mine always have huge monster hissy fits prior to farrowing with feverish activity before flinging themselves down to be quiet for an hour and then it begins. Go and sit with her, get her to lay down for a tummy rub if you can and you should be able to see/feel her tummy rippling with piglet activity, another way is stand behind her and look thro her back legs and you will see her belly has dropped significantly this means the piglets are dropping into the birth canal so she won't be far away.
Mostly count to ten be calm she will sense stress.
Good luck  :fc: hth

Trev go to her NOW and check for blockage in her birth canal by inserting your fingers in her vulva, after having only 3 and then nothing for over an hour its the first thing i would have done, if theres a blocker the rest will have died inside her and that will make her seriously ill, hope vet is on their way as she will need abs most certainly. he may suggest an oxytocing jab to get her womb contracting again to expel whats left.

I could be way off the mark here Trev, but my gut feeling is she's not finished  :-\
I dunno if it's retained afterbirth or more piglets but I suspect something's stuck/blocked.

If you can get her up (go with pig boards, just to be safe) even just so she lays down on the other side that might be enough to get things moving before the vet arrives. A shot of oxytocin will help the womb contract and should also help with getting things moving. If you feel confident enough, try inserting a well washed or gloved and lubricated hand, just into the vulva and have a feel. A pigs womb has 2 horns to it and where they meet you can sometimes get a bottleneck. A quick feel will let you know if this is the case  You'll need to give an antibiotic jag if you do this though.
If she's getting really stressed you can give her a couple of cans of beer to help chill her out (or, you can give her a seditive jag from the vet - but the cans of beer work just as well IMHO)

The jab will make her womb contract and she may expel some more afterbirth later, the abs and the inflam will kick in soon, she's probably a bit knackered after all that pushing & shoving so would leave her quiet for a couple of hours, are piglets feeding? if she lets them its a good sign. if she's not happy with them encourage them into creep area where its warm and then try them on again in an hour or so when she's had time to settle. sounds like they had a good feed early on in proceedings so they've had her first milk which is the important stuff.
Later on encourage her up for a walk out which encourage her to have a pee/dump and then try her with a little food, make it a sloppy version of usual ration(i use dilute milk), don't try to increase it at this stage and see how she goes.

We make the first meal after farrowing something light and tasty to encourage them to eat - fruit and half rations of sloppy food like Mandy.
Hope she's okay  :fc: Keep us posted

Our last gilt was exhausted after her litter. It took her quite some time to get back to herself, almost 24hrs.  Best of luck Trev. The vet has double checked, she had all the medications so  :fc: for you, you girls and her babies.
