:o I was in our local butchers a few days ago and looked at his price list for pork and OMG. Now we are remote and no competion and they are VERY good butchers - nothing fancy, but good meat and I love using them, but the cheapest cut was streaky bacon and that was over £6 per kilo and up to £9-£10 per kilo for prime cuts. Even sausages were £7+ per kilo
I recon that my pigs cost me £4-£5 per kilo all in so, although it looked a lot on paper it was worth doing :thumbsup:
Just wondered how the pork that you all produce compares with local prices?

I think that's reasonable price wise - assuming it's local/free range and assuming the producer is getting a fair price for their pigs :thumbsup:
Super-cheap pork and bacon are what the supermarkets/buyers use as a stick to beat the producers with IMHO, paying a price which is below what it's costing to raise them :(
Our sausages are £10 per kilo :-\

Those prices sound reasonable to me, but then again I live in suburbia in Hertfordshire.

Surely this should read "Pleased at the price of pork" :)
With both commercial farmers and many smallholders losing money and getting out of pigs, we need the price to reflect the costs !

Agree :) . With the cost of feed this is the sort of prices that needs to be paid. Hope whoever supplies him gets a fair cut :)

Oaklands and RaisinHall, I worded the topic very badly :innocent: as what I was meaning was, that with everyone going on about not being able to produce pork from a couple of pigs to make it worthwhile, I was really pleased with what my pork worked out at :excited: It was also not a dig at my local butcher either, as they are very good and you pay for what you get when it comes to meat!
I was talking to a man at our feed supplier the other week whos brother is selling up as he said it was costing him more to produce the pork than he could sell it for. His figures were £7 per kilo to produce and selling at £4 per kilo - someone was getting a real bargain :o
So when in the butchers I took note of what they were selling pork for, so it wasn't a rant about the price of pork it was more to say that you can produce your own cheaper and tastes so much better :thumbsup:
I had no outlay in buildings for the first pigs - they got a corner of the steadings and fencing was all ok, so I did not have to add on those cost either :relief:
I meant the post to be a positive thing and not negative as it does indeed sound once i read it back :-[ :-[

I live in France and pork is cheap here. When they have too much to sell you can buy really very good pork chops for 2.60 Euros ish a Kg. There is overproduction and the government will pay you Not to keep pigs. The assumption being that you did once keep pigs otherwise it would be something not to miss out on.
i do not eat lamb but that is very expensive and would be a great export from smallholders direct to the very many UK people out here. We have vans drive down the motorways and who stop off at various towns to meet UK buyers. Cheese , bacon and tesco shopping are popular but it would not be difficult to advertise and sell lamb direct from the UK. Pork ? Cheap at chips here! >:(
