Title: Shetland tup lamb (Fife)
Post by: egglady on November 05, 2012, 11:39:21 pm
We have decided, a little late I know, to put our shetland ewes to the tup this year if possible.

Two questions:

1. does anyone know if the St Andrews abbatoir is still open?  and if not, where is the next nearest?

2. can any kind soul lend us a sheltand tup for our girls please?  We are near Cupar but can easily pick up.

Many thanks

laura

I don't think you are too late at all!
I am in balmy Somerset and I'm not putting the tup to my girls til the beginning of December :D
I only keep a small flock and would rather be lambing in May than March! It's warmer and the later they tup, the less chance of SMV in my opinion :fc:
Also, you may find it easier to find a lad for your girls as plenty of peeps will have finished tupping by December and the boys will be spare

Contact the Shetland sheep society, they will surely be members near you and maybe have a spare boy or two...

I have 2 Shetland tups that I donr want any more. (A moorit and a Katmoget)
If you want them you would need to arrange collection from Orkney, or come on holiday here with a trailer

thanks everyone.  Orkney just a wee bit too far sadly.  And tupping in December makes perfect sense...as long as no snow!!  Would pity the poor fella getting his tackle out when it's 10 degrees below ...lol

Thanks Anke for SSS advice.  Only need a wee borrow so hoping someone local has one.

thanks all

the only thing to bear in mind with very late lambing is the flies bothering the ewe round her teats - mastitis risk.

Hi Egglady - your welcome to borrow my registered Ram, he is in with his girls at the moment so by Dec will be available if you don't find anything closer - we're Aberdeenshire

thanks Brucklay, really kind of you. But a bit far for our 6 ladies.

and lachlanmarcus - many thanks for that advice too.  Their field will be quite windy so hopefully that will help with the flies?

Oh wow, if you can get one of Rena Douglas's tups you'd be getting some quality!
