Title: Land Rover Fire
Post by: zwartbles on November 05, 2012, 10:39:44 am
Our Land Rover Freelander2, 27500 miles, 2yrs 5mnths old, caught fire last Sunday. Strong smell of diesel and loss of power suggests a fuel line failure but Land Rover are not interested. Warranty doesn't cover fire !!!!!! and they won't even inspect the vehicle unless insisted on by our insurers.
We now have all the consequent expenses of policy excess, increased premiums, use of another vehicle until claim settled, probably with a daft value paid out.
Anyone else had Land Rover problems ?

That's the same car we have!! Oh my life, that's awful for you. Ours is 3 weeks old. I'd not heard anything like this with all the research etc - h any problems before the fire? have you been on any landrover forums?

I've had many Land Rovers over many years, all of them old, leaky and rusty. None of them have ever caught fire.

It'll be very difficult to prove the manufacture is at fault. If it was brand new and went up in smoke fair enough but a couple of years down the road any number of things could have an effect on what has happened.

Never heard of 1 catching fire, loads of electrical faults and the gearboxes are junk done loads of them.. Wouldn't give one garage space myself...

Our old landy 90 started to catch fire when we were moving a load of sheep a few years ago, hubby managed to put it out. I think he only stopped it because of the trailer of sheep on the back,  cause it was an old rust bucket. Had he been on his own he might have been tempted to let it burn!!
Sorry to hear about your freelander i hope you get some money back for it

We did loads of research before opting to get our freelander2. I'll be honest, I was not keen on the old freelander but we heard lots of good about how these are drastically improved upon the old design and while I hear what you are saying Carl, I'm inclined to believe that they are not as rubbish as they used to be.
Can't begin to say how gutted I am for you Zwartables, just such an awful image and horrible for you to go through. I absolutely love our freelander2, in fact its unlikely I'll ever choose anything different again! Unless it turns out there is a design fault causing random fires of course.....!

As you say Plums it's a nice comfy vehicle. We have only ever used it as a car as we like the high driving position. We have an old L200 that we use off-road and for towing.
The thing is that as it has been dealer serviced from new and is still under warranty we feel more than a little let down.

Thank you all for your interest and sympathy ----------- all donations to be sent to ----------- :)

Really bad.  A horrible thing to happen, especially with Land rovers' less than sympathetic attitude.   :bouquet:

I've had a Freelander 1 and a Freelalnder 2 both were the TD4 and both were a bag of crap.
They have the name and the look of a tough vehicle but I've only been towed in once in 42 years of driving and I owe that to my Freelander 1. Brake failure, wipers packed up, had to be resprayed, on the 2 series I got rid at 16000 miles when it offered up a fault on the the diff.
I'd never touch another !

I drive Nissans, having had endless hassle with both a Defender and a Freelander. Interesting that nearly every farmer down this dale, miles from anywhere, so needing reliability, drives Nissans and Mitsubishis!

Sorry to hear your car went up in flames. Maybe an independent vehicle assessor could find the source of the fire? I hear a HUGE percentage of vehicle fires are caused by faulty electrics if a professional assessor finds the problem with the freelanders electrics then you may have recourse.

I did find this

I have always avoided any vehicle with the word "Rover" in it as a point of principle. I hear so many complaints about them. Our 20 year old Pajero is the most Reliable/Robust vehicle we've ever owned...... and its cumfy  too!

We have a friends who organise extreme trophy raid off-road competitions in Russia and they almost all insist on Japanese 4x4's. They say the landrover is not strong enough. The one landy that entered the event we were involved in broke a driveshaft. Mind you it was tough going.

Hope you get things sorted out soon.

Thanks for that Robbie, there were some recalls on the earlier model but ours was 2010.
I still think fuel problem. Smell of diesel, loss of power ( fuel leaking out and system losing pressure).., fire when we stopped. Fuel still leaking, none now going into the cylinders, temperature rising with no airflow.
We use our L200 for towing and dragging round the muddy lanes but the Freelander was just such a comfy car !!

Perhaps a call to the "Watchdog" team on the Beeb would be in order. If they contacted Landrover, it may push them to inspect it at least. They wouldnt want the bad publicity, especially in this climate. Good Luck.

I think Mary has a good point there. Jaguar Landrover have been celebrating huge upturns in business and opening new plants, they don't need a negative rush in the media and could do with an opportunity to sort this ASAP.
I for one and really worried about this. Not only because I drive ours daily for school run etc but OH does long distance work runs in it (hundreds of miles)
