Hello there, first time poster here...

I have 4 GOS that are ready for slaughter now. I've been looking to find someone to come and slaughter at my premises. They are for personal consumption only. I could only find one guy and he wouldn't take the job as they're over 50kgs.

So... two questions:
Does anyone know of anyone who offers such a service in my area - surrey, hampshire, w.sussex border - Haslemere to be precise.

Does anyone know of any companies in my area that rent out suitable trailers in the event that they need to be taken to slaughter?

I don't know about anything in your area but just wondered if you had thought asking anyone with a horse box?  We found it impossible to hire a livestock trailer so went down the horse box route. Paid £70 :(  for 48 hrs.

Hello Hammerwood
Really this is something you should have thought of when you first got your pigs. You find it difficult to get them booked in for slaughter at an abbatoir as they are starting to get busy with autumn kills and gearing up to Xmas, for your own consumption you better have several large freezers available as there will be a huge amount of meat from 4 pigs (approx 200kg butchered maybe more if they're big)
Mrs S has suggested a horse trailer but make sure it has gates some slaughter houses will not take trailers without gates for H&S reasons.
Really pleased you chose GOS as they're a good pig to start with.
Hope you manage to get them booked in somewhere & learn from this years experience that you need to plan ahead if you decide to fatten again next year.

If you ring around quickly you may well get them in this month. For December you have to book in July!!!!
As for freezers, if you are short on space ask around relatives, neighbours etc. They may accomodate in return for a bit of pork or sausages :fc:
