Title: Germinate god damn you!!!!!!!
Post by: sellickbhoy on May 28, 2009, 11:09:18 am
After a roaring success last year with carrots, beetroot, parsnips and peas, i'm most annoyed that after a month waiting only a few peas have bothered to poke their heads through!!!

grrrrrr - i really don't have the patience for this gardening lark you know!

Could be the pea seeds got eaten by mice or birds? you can still put them in, in succession every 10 days. cover them with fleece or plastic until they show. Half of mine still don't show and then we get the slugs, but what came up and survived is looking good. I experimented with soaking the seeds for half a day to speed the whole thing up - good for peas, no success there with beans...Carrots do take a long time germinating. Never tried parsnips, heard they are difficult. Will try white turnips if I can find some space between all the rocket! :&>

Snap !  I planted a long row of peas in mid march to find only a handful germinated (mice probably) wheras the row I planted in mid April looks like 100 % germination.

My asparagas peas took ages to come through fluffywelshsheep - but 100% up in the end.  I always grow ordinary peas and magetout in pots before planting out because of mice, but this year for the first time they've had some away once I have planted them out.

Okay, I only planted the seeds last week and not sure how long the carrots and brocolli should take to germinate - I'm impatient ! BUT the peas, leeks, and turnips are showing already and the tatties and onion sets that were planted late are racing on now.  ;D
I love all this sun  8)  8)  8)

Right, that's it, i've had enough.

they've been in the ground long enough to have been showing something by now - but not a thing. I blame Mrs SB as she did them all!!

I'm taking the spade to the whole area tonight - i need to dig out a surprisingly large number of rogue spuds from last year anyway and i'm re-sowing the lot. carrots, beetroot, parsnips and fennel - i was really looking forward to my own fennel too!! grrrr

will start off some more peas and beans in the greenhouse - luckily i had started some off in there already and they are looking quite nice, so i'll pop them into the raised beds and put some new ones in pots in the greenhouse.

Carrots can take a while, but it depends on soil temperature i think.

I planted some carrots and parsnip and something is showing in both (I'll need to check my book to when i planted them)

btw My asparagus peas have started to show up with their set of first leaves.

well, that's the whole lot re-sown

fingers crossed this time. there were loads of rogue spuds removed, will need to pay more atetntion next year!

added lots of new fresh compost, maybe that was what was needed.

anyone tried sugarsnax carrots? apparently very sweet - i've given them a go.

yeah, theres patience and theres patience - can handle teh parsnips and carrots not showing, but i'd expected teh fennel and beetroot to show signs of life after 7 weeks.

I blame the future Mrs SB, she did the sowing, she clearly cursed them!!

My frist lot came thought but a bit hit and missed has big empty patches but the other sowing where okay, I might be down to the weather, As i sown my 1st batch beetroots within days of Ann (I went and helped her) but my other batches are fine.

I am so tempted to pick my peas pods but have been 'told off' by hubby as he like the peas not the pods lol. Carrots are salad edible size might sneek a couple out while hubby isn't around so i can munch some lol I have plenty in the raised beds and tubs around the garden

Next year, i'll have 3 greenhouses and a monster polytunnel, i can see an early sowing going into one of the greenhouses to get an early crop out, i'll chuck heat lights into it too, just to make sure.

all part of the learning process i guess

I have failed with carrots and parsnips for the past 3 years so this year I have sown in large pots with a good germination so far.  I think I was sowing too early before the ground temperature was high enough. So like SB am trying again sowing this evening in between rows of lettuce. Fingers crossed.
