just had a new ewe lamb air mailed to us from foula an island 20 miles off the coast of shetland. less stressful than a rough crossing on a ferry. the two ladies on the flight fought it was funny.
-
really? I saw a few months back a couple of shetland ram lambs for sale on foula, but I assumed I would have to go by boat to collect them - did this wee one really fly? what were the arrangements?
-
You must be made of money, does she lay golden lambs. Are there not enough Shetland sheep on Shetland for you? There are huggins for sale now. Wish I had enough money to fly one ewe in , a ram maybe but it must be one special shetland ewe! Good luck with her she must be a special
-
Did she get a seat? :roflanim:
Any photos? I bet it was a picture. Sounds as though it made the day of the other passengers. Love it!

The Foula Shetlands we have seen are a different type from the main Island type, so well worth bringing in.
Any pics shetland Paul? :sheep:
They used to send calves on the train, tied in sacks and carried in the goods van....is this the modern version? I have heard that the sea trip to Foula can be very rough, a bit like the one out to St Kilda. Definitely not for me :P nor for your little ewe :)
-
Fleecewife lots of sheep come from Foula , the ferries full of them sometimes and ponies. The meat is very popular with butchers and restaurants. What I am asking why 'fly' one ewe in? He can do what he wants of course , it is just a first and shocked me. Especially when a man who lives in the middle of Pauls croft and mine goes to Foula every day in his own boat.
-
Maybe there was a spare seat on the plane.
Maybe he just wanted to make the News :sheep:
It's a good story anyway 8)
-
not made of money it cost a £1 to fly her. we did not arrange it the seller did. the seller was worried about the crossing. the lamb was a bit of a pet.

this was a rachel special nowt to do with me apart from paying. she has a very good freece and the colour that ruth want for her weaving so its fine with us. we have flown chickens to fair isle.
-
love the picture!!!
its very shaun the sheep!!!
-
She is very cute and looks perfectly happy in her crate :sheep: I expect she will manage to be 'a bit of a pet' with you too shetlandpaul, even if it's against your better judgement ;D . Just £1 to fly her - that's amazing!! It would have cost an arm and a leg by Parcel Force.
Thanks for the pic
-
Love that piccie, and that lambie looks mighty fine too

Excellent ;D

I got her because it has become increasingly difficult to fine a good quality fleckit shetland that isn't related to our flock, she is really well breed and of course a lovely colour and she has much more wool then the rest of our lambs of the same age. As stated she is a foula sheep which as they are a 'closed' isle so to speak ie they are not allowed to bring in any sheep they have become slightly different to the mainland shetland sheep. As stated the flight only cost £1 which really is a drop in the ocean for transporting animals. The flight is alot less stressful then any boat no matter who sails it as it is alot less rough and alot quicker plus there were no more ferry loads of sheep coming out for a while. She being one of our animals of course has to have a name so I am pleased to intoduce Amelia named after Amelia Earhart of course. Hope you enjoy the photos.

She is really wool, and thank you she is a very nice sheep, you can see now that she is in with the other sheep that she is a little different, she she has a different head but she should cross nicely with the ram.
Sally is you find any cheap way of getting sheep from Iceland please let us know as mum really wants some but we can't quite afford that much oh and maybe we could sneak a pony or two over ;)
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO please dont tell her really don't. a lady a few miles away imported a number of Icelandic ponies from Iceland if your desperate we can ask her how. but it won't be cheap. even rarer are Faroe ponies and sheep. very intresting breeds
-
I know how she get the ponies from Iceland, she got the 4 ferried from Iceland to mainland Europe they got driven through Europe to France, where they got on the very to England and driven up to Shetland. It must have cost an arm and a leg, much more money then my parents would ever pay for a pony for me.

Horses for courses! Some folk wont eat beef, some folk wont eat pork, some folk dont eat meat full stop, some folk eat tarantulas and icky sea things. It is a cultural/ personal thing. Transportation is the issue.

Anyone still following this?

Hello and welcome - you are actually living on Foula!!!! 8) When on holiday last summer we were catching glimpses of the island while walking on the west side of the (main) islands and discussing that it must be really really remote! Next time we get the chance to come up north I so want to go across the Foula, didn't fit it in last time.
-
I am. It was my gorgeous lamb that Rachel bought. Just disappointed I can't keep them all, glad she's in safe hands.

Amelia is doing well, but she is one ewe you can definitely not claim is a pet she is very flighty and jumps when in a pen. One a slightly different note I rooed my first ever sheep thanks to Amelia. She is super hardy and tough and has been the picture of perfect health which is great considering she wouldn't have had the immunity to some of the sheep illnesses here on the mainland.
So here are some pictures ranging from last winter till a couple of months ago,

She is gorgeous, ESP that comedy 'tache!!! :excited:
-
what a fun story, she is lovely!

Amelia's brother this year is equally as stunning. Really like what her mother, Flip, is producing. Now, if only she could give me one in the right colour I'd be delighted. :fc: I've got her husband for this year picked out and can't wait for lambing time next year.
-
We have finally found our new ram too so Amelia has herself a new husband properly flecket black flecket ram lamb and we are getting a black shaela flecket ewe too, so looking forwards to getting spotty lambs as katmogget is getting a little boring now.
