Title: My Shetland flock - getting there
Post by: jaykay on October 07, 2012, 07:49:17 pm
Here is my flock, with the recent additions. I'm getting to quite like the mix of colours now  ;D And here is my new tup lamb, Smokey, many hopes pinned on him  He's got a black and a brown gene, so should get some variety. Plus obviously the katmoget gene.

Lovely Jaykay, that's a great top pic, really lovely.  It's very satisfying having a lovely mixture but they all look similar at the same time rather than lots of different breeds so to speak.  Look forward to seeing some nice knits  :knit: in the next couple of years - if I can put my name down for a nice patchwork knit blanket in all colours please .....

Hope smokey endears himself well with all of you

That's good to hear Mallows, thank you. I'm still learning what's 'good' in a Shetland. I was worried they were rather wide, I'm used to Roughs, where tighter horns are wanted.

I need a Shetland 101, with lots of photos. Here is a good set of horns, here is a bad set, here is a good x, here is a bad version and so on  :)

lovely looking flock JayKay   Smokey looks (to my untrained eye) a good looking ram, hope he lives up to expectation.
We've only got 6 girls, plan is to steadily expand....if you do find a "shetland 101 bible" give me a nudge. every day is a learning day  :)

If I work out how to put photos up I can send you pic of a bad (too tight a curve) horns... one of my tup lambs has got them... so he will be curry.

That would be good, thank you.

In Roughs, a pair of horns that is too tight is just sawn off. Tight horns go with a thick neck and a good carcase, wide horns with a scrawny animal. So tight horns are admired. I can see I shall have to re-learn what a handsome animal looks like  :)

They are gorgeous Jaykay.

And for your Shetland 101 here one of my boys - Skein.  He is an approved ram but his  breeder tells me she feels his horns could be a little lighter.

Hi Fronhaul
I was thinking maybe of getting my ram looked at in the hope of getting him approved status... what is involved? What do they look for? Thanks.  You ram is truly gorgeous!

He is two rising 3 Jaykay.  I can't wait to see what his lambs are going to be like.  Glad you think he is handsome, he is also a real gent so I am rather proud of him.  His fleece was assessed at 19/20 by someone when he made a guest appearance at the Welsh region Jacob Sheep Society open day recently.  Mallows Flock I have pm'ed you because I think you may know the perfect person to advise you.
