Title: Broody hen again!
Post by: ayrt1010 on September 19, 2012, 05:38:32 pm
Just wondering how many times can a hen go broody? Claire ( chocolate Orpington) has only laid about 10 eggs since she had her 4 chicks earlier in the year? :o

One of my ducks has started sitting, fortunately in the 'garden' where the dogs have free-rein, so she's safe from foxes at least. But has no-one told her we could have snow before she hatches them  ::)

It seems to be the time for Broodys , I have 2 sitting eggs and 3 others sitting in wait for something to lay an egg in one of the nest boxes  and they then jump in and refuse to move off it or let anything else in to lay  :-\

Yep - same here too  ???
All our broodies have had 2 cycles of hatchings, one is on her 3rd lot & another hen has just gone broody (for her first time).  Our layers also gone from 11-15 eggs a day to just 2-3  ::)
I think the weather has really upset our chooks this year  :raining:

Agree, some of mine went twice-but I have just managed to stop the last one,it seems a bit late in the year now for chicks, unless of course you have indoor facilities,it has gone really cold here on a night, most are already having fires and heating on-me too..brrr.

(No Scottish comments please,I have relatives in Aberdeen-they laugh at me saying it's cold! saying I am soft ;D)
