Title: Dog poem
Post by: Sylvia on September 14, 2012, 04:59:30 pm
My brother-in-law has printed and framed this poem for me as a caravan warming gift. I dare say a lot of you have read it before but I thought it was so lovely.

When God had made the earth and sky
  The flowers and the trees
He then made the animals and all the birds and bees
And when His work was finished
Not one was just the same
He said "I'll walk this earth of mine
And give each one a name"
And so He travelled land and sea
  And everywhere He went
  A little creature followed Him
  Until it's strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth and in the sky and sea
The little creature said "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me!"
The Father smiled and gently said
I've left you 'til the end
And turned my own name back to front
Your name is Dog, my friend"

THE DOGGIES MEETING
Anonymous

The doggies held a meeting,
They came from near and far,
Some came by motor cycle,
And some by motor car
Each doggie passed the doorway,
Each doggie signed the book
Each one unshipped his asshole
And hung it on a hook.

One dog was not invited
It sorely raised his ire
He ran into the meeting hall
And loudly shouted, "Fire!"
It threw them in confusion
And without a second look
Each grabbed anothers asshole
From off another hook

And that's the reason why sir,
When walking down the street
And that's the reason why sir,
When doggies chance to meet
And that's the reason why sir,
On land, abroard or home
They'll sniff each other's backside...
To see if it's their own.

Sylvia your poem was lovely.  I just happened on this one today, and I apologise in advance, but just had to share   :'(

Do I go home today?

My family brought me home cradled in their arms.
They cuddled me and smiled at me and said I was full of charm.
They played with me and laughed with me and showered me with toys.
I sure do love my family, especially the girls and boys.

The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats.
They even let me sleep with them - all snuggled in the sheets.
I used to go for walks, often several times a day.
They even fought to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say.

These are the things I'll not forget - a cherished memory,
because I now live in the shelter - without my family.

They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe.
But I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new.
The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug.
So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bedroom rug.

They said that I was out of control, and would have to live outside.
This I did not understand, although I tried and tried.
The walks stopped, one by one; they said they hadn't time.
I wish that I could change things, I wish I knew my crime.

My life became so lonely, in the back yard, on a chain.
I barked and barked, all day long, just to keep from going insane.

So they brought me to the shelter, but were embarrassed to say why.
They said I caused an allergy, then they each kissed me goodbye.
If I'd only had some classes, when I was just a little pup,
then I would have been a better dog when I was all grown up.

"You only have one day left." I heard the worker say.
Does that mean I have a second chance?

DO I GO HOME TODAY?

That last one was so sad I had to re-read the funny one to cheer myself up.  Loved the first one too.

I've had to read that a few times just to get past the first verse :'( :'( :'(  Maybe this poem should be included in "puppy packs" or, preferably given to prospective owners before they pick up the pup.

Having worked in stray kennels when I first left school, this brings back very painful memories. Cuddling near 100 dogs per week as they had their final day  :'( and laying each body , a wasted life , outside for collection  :'(

They don't lose their life for any other reasons than   thoughlessness

I strongly believe registration for dog ownership should be brought in and regulated.

This is a very moving poem too....tissues at the ready....reminds me of my boy who died last year.

"I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said, "It's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.
It's possible for me to be so near you every day
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled; I think you knew...
In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
And say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out... then come home to be with me."
