Title: Living the dream slowly but surely
Post by: SarahR on May 17, 2009, 04:31:38 pm
Hi everyone,
We have recently started a smallholding in West Sussex and already have some chickens who are producing us many eggs.
We now want to get some sheep (about 8 and pigs (2) but as we are new to all this, we would like some guidance.  If anyone can think of anywhere in West (or East) Sussex that may have some for sale please direct us.  Obviously we have looked online etc but nothing can beat a recommendation.
We now have our CPH number and wondered what else we need in terms of meeting legislation etc?  Have looked at DEFRAs website but sometimes it all gets a bit confusing.  We will be able to collect the livestock and take it to our land.

Thanks

Sarah R

Hi Sarah

Now you have got your CPH, you'll need to get a herd number for pigs.  In Scotland this is from your local authority/council, may be the same in England.  You'll also need a flock number for sheep which you get from your local DEFRA office.
In both cases you will need a movement licence for the stock, but this will be provided by the seller when you collect them.

Good luck with them!  and remember.........Pigs, very clever.........Sheep, incredibly stupid!

Hello Sarah

I'm in East Sussex and have a little smallholding (25 acres). We keep sheep, pigs, chickens and geese (plus the freeloading

horses, dogs and cats !!)

I will have pedigree lambs available at weaning (end of august) and hopefully piggy wigs too. There does seem to be a shortage of weaner's available locally at the moment. Are you looking for rare breeds or commercial stock ?
