I usually buy sow meal and dampen it for the KK's. My usual feed supplier is not open Sunday, so went to another one. He only had the nuts, so had those, but find they do not last as long, thats why I have the meal. Anyway, got chatting, and he said I should be feeding the Kunes the pot bellied pig feed, as it was less fattening.
So, should I??
I have noticed that the pot bellied feed is more expensive, as is the ex battery hen feed, and the pygmy goat feed. Needless to say, I do not buy those.

you should be feeding weight for weight if for instance it was 1 lb of dry meal before wetting then feed 1 lb of nuts unless the meal is in 25 kilo bags and the nuts are in 20 kilo bags
the kunnie feed has a lower protein level all these feeds have been formulated not for the specified animals but for the owners
have a look at the feed labels and compare the ingredients the bulk of it is wheat and barley or cereals in any form :farmer:

I've always just fed mine on standard sow rolls or sow & weaner nuts - they do fine on them ;)
I give 1lb a day for everything other than nursing sows, plenty of fruit & veg and access to grass, works for me :innocent:

I used to buy the expensive "special stuff" (that was until Karen educated me) & I still managed to get my Portia overweight :innocent:

its the protein content, I understood?
that PBP specialist feed has a more appropriate % protein level for Kunes. 16-18% ?? (or something!)
As you know Roxy, I feed ours sow & weaner meal, to no adverse effects!

Thank You!! I only have 4 KK's = well 3 and the diddy one :D They can put away an alarming amount of feed in a very short time. After the man in the shop told me this, he declared he knew nothing about feeding pigs .....but he was sure what he told me was right. Or was he trying to sell his expensive PBP feed?

Don't let them fool you Roxy - they will eat until they make themselves sick :P quite literally. The last time (oh, no, just realised it was nearly 3 weeks ago :o - barricades up this weekend again ::) ) Portia did her usual & tried to get to the boar overnight. Beaten by my extra defences, she decided to attend to her other urges & ate nearly a whole 25kg sack of sow rolls - naughty :pig: Not sure quite how she did it - not sure if she ate until she was sick, then ate some more or did she just stuff it all into her chops & then vomited - ???

on the rare occasion we had to buy in kk feed we would feed them grass nuts 16% protein when we got them they had been feed S&W 1lb pd but were well over weight.

Roxy, your feed merchant is just looking after his own business :o , some will rip you off and not take a second thought about it, :o yes he will tell you that they need a dearer food that does the same as the one you are buying just now. We have worked with East Coast Viners Grain for many years and have spread the word to HH, BEEWYCHED and several others who have been delighted with the quality of feed from ECVG. Oops sorry about the wee plug. Anyway you buy what you have been buying for your pig, if you are happy with the results of your pigs do not change. True saying- if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
