Title: Live near anyone/anything well known/famous?
Post by: Roxy on August 24, 2012, 11:46:14 pm
Just down the road from us - we can see it, and smell some nice smells when the wind blows - is Swizzels Matlow, the sweet manufacturer (Love Hearts, Parma Violets, Drumsticks).  Big employer of the local area.  Regularly pass Holland Pie factory, park cakes, Robertson bakery, McVities (ooh, the smell of jaffa cakes baking!)
Our land is right opposite Kinder Scout, which is very popular for walkers and well known for the Kinder Trespass, when Benny Rothwell and other walkers challenged gamekeepers and won the right for walkers to gain free access to the moorland.  And on the other side we have Lyme Park, stately home and park, where Pride and Predudice among other things was filmed.

Long Lartin Cat A prison - yay, the glamour!  :excited:

Next door neighbour was the animator for Fantastic Mr Fox (and they love foxes)

Toyah Willcox and her husband (also famous apparently) lives a few miles down the road.

(Doesn't count but when I was in my teens we lived next door to Ozzy Osbourne who bought his house off Robert Smith (cure) but then Robert Kilroy Silk moved in so the glamour and excitement dwindled  ;)   )

I used to say I was "Prince Charles' nearest neighbour."  Yeah, right - just in one direction there were no other properties between Highgrove and my wee cottage - but it was about 2 miles!   :D  I did used to walk my dogs in Westonbirt Arboretum, though, and that is next door to Highgrove.

Now, as you all know, we farm on Hadrian's Wall, which is pretty famous, I think!

Wordsworth, I'm going to get a plaque put up on the wall saying 'Wordsworth didn't live here'
he lived just about everywhere else in the area though.

I live at the top of the Ironbridge Gorge, which is a World Heritage Site.  I used to go to the same writers' group as Della Galton (short story writer and novelist).  My granddad's cousin was Albert Ball, VC, WWI flying ace.

Our last house was the farm where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were settled when they were pardoned and came back from Australia.  There was a little plaque on the wall (placed by the TUC) and lots of Canadian visitors would photograph it when they came to trace their ancestors. (Short history lesson over).

I loved that house but now the area is complete TOWIE so we have moved to Dorset - where the Martyrs originated from ...funny old world sometimes

My Nana went to look at one of Ozzy Osbournes houses, in a buying sense, but didn't like it! Then a very good friend of our bought the same house years later and lives in it still! Although they have now knocked it down and built another as it had a very strange layout. They sold the toilet on E-bay as it was all patterned and an avid fan bought it  ;D

We live 5 miles from Stonyhurst College.  Arthur Conan Doyle was a past pupil and apparently the setting for the Hounds of the Baskervilles is based on the college.  JRR Tolkien used to visit his son at the college and wrote part of Lord of the Rings there.  They say he was inspired by the area and parts are recognisable in his work.  Finally the building was also used as the private girls' school in 'Three Men & a Little Lady'  :)

As a young girl I lived for a while in a house called "Wellesley House" outside was a blue plaque saying "Leighnnant General, Sir Arthur Wellesley, afterwards Duke of Wellington lived here before leaving for the Peninsula Campaign in 18008"

I lodged in Primrose Hill when I left home.  It had a blue plaque on the wall for when W.B.Yeats lived there but was also the house where Sylvia Plath committed suicide ten years earlier.  Was flats when I was there: OH was working at London Zoo at the time.  It definitely wasn't fashionable.
