Title: hot deals in Tesco
Post by: lill on August 21, 2012, 08:08:46 am
Went shopping last night, a chore i detest always have and probably always will. Looking for beans the new branston ones as they are better than heinz, well a packet of 4 tins x 410g was £2.55p, 1 tin of 410g was 35p, multiply 35x4=£1.40 think this is right yep it is, so now my question is why the hell do they charge so much for the plastic wrapping on the bundle of 4, are we all conditioned that buying in bulk is cheaper yes i think we are and its not till we just start to be more observant that we realise this is not the best way to go. Complained to the checkout assistant and even she could not answer the question.

Does buying in bulk pay, not for me it does not, even the reduced bread worburtons was £1.05p and the worburtons bread deal was 2 for £2.00 so where is the saving, just the 2 things i noticed there will be hundreds more.  Thanks for taking the time to read. Maybe more of you will think twice now before making the muilt buy purchases.

Lill, maybe I am mean but I always work out the difference between the single and multi buys when I see the offers. Time and time again the singles work out cheaper and its not just Tesco either.
You have to be a canny shopper these days to get the best deals

Sally, they say that Tesco is cheaper, well the ads does, this was only 2 things i mentioned, the coffee, tea also is cheaper to buy as a single item, yes i would say that i am a thrifty person but will need to be more so.

That's a good point Lill. I always assume (wrongly in many cases) that the multibuy is going to be cheaper! I'm glad you've posted this as it will make me think carefully and examine my purchases.
With a family of 7 being a canny shopper is important (as it is for everyone I guess!)

I had my delivery from Approved Food yesterday - that's where my bulk buying comes in. It will take a while but we will get through the 120 ice pops, 50 naan breads, 200 sachets of hot chocolate etc but at 10% of the price we'd have been paying at the shops its worth it  ;) ;D

Supermarkets are cheeky beggars and try and catch those who are in a rush or can't be bothered checking prices. We are on a limited budget so i do spend time checking.  Something else they do is have items 50% off, in big letters but the price they quote as the original one, isn't always strictly true. Yes, they sometimes stay within the rules but they know how to get round them!

If you have a Lidl store near you, you may find some bargains there. They sell good quality foods at a fair price.
Lill, I tried Warburtons bread once when I couldn't summon up the energy to make my own. I'd rather eat pig s##t :o  And that goes for Hovis, Tesco Finest et. al. (Don't buy Lidl bread ;) )

My OH is the price checker, I'm useless at it but he is great. Quite often we find the offers aren't as good. We've even had some stuff in the reduced as its going out of date that work out more expensive. I'm a sucker for BOGOF's etc though!

I hate BOGOFs!  Especially on perishable food, it just leads to overconsumption and/or waste.  I wish they'd all just charge a reasonable amount in the first place.

It is always cheaper to buy loose veg for example (carrots, onions and with such a horrible summer I don't have single carrot in my garden >:( , so have to buy) as opposed to pre-packed/pre-weighed, as I usually have the (human) kids with me they have to work out what is cheaper.... you do get funny looks( especially from the shop asistants) though when you stand and explain to your kids how to calculate it all...
I don't do Tesco though, but Co-op does it all the time. The annoying thing with the Co-op is though the smaller shops (and they have recently re-structured/re-categorised their stores) often now only have pre-packed stuff... I feel sorry for the car-less people (mainly the OAPs) who have to spend more just because they cannot get to the larger shops as regularly.

BOGOF offers, please remember when these offers are available it is the PRODUCER who has to bear the brunt of these offers and not the store that is promoting them, i do not buy them. Some wonder why the supermarkets make the money, they don't bloody pay for 50% of the goods, greedy barstewards.  ???

I was just chatting to my pal about something similar, the Co-Op - they are advertising grapes as half price at £2.00 but I have NEVER seen their grapes at £4 eve and I used to buy them 3 times a week so I know they are normally £2 or £2.50. So it is just a scam! I dont buy any fruit from them now, its not much of a stand but it makes me feel better LOL

Another thing to be wary of is packet sizing.  I always assumed that bigger meant cheaper but found that sometimes (often) it is cheaper to buy two small rather than one large.
What often surprises me (why, I don't now) is when fresh food has reached its self buy date and it reduced, how little it is reduced by.  £4.50 down to £4.30 on a packet of meat for example.  It's almost like they would rather throw it away than really reduce it.  I suppose they rely on people seeing the reduced sticker and not checking what its original price was.

Before all the extended shopping hours, I used to go to Sainsbury at 4pm on a Saturday and buy food that was really reduced and go home and fill my freezer.  Saved quite a bit that way.

I do that MGoM, for a little while we found the time that Tesco did their 90% reductions. Filled the freezer quite well. They started changing the times though. Sainsbury seems very reluctant to reduce though.

Its the same in all the Supermakets, in Morrisons always check prices again sizes, have had many savings doing this - and what is it about bring beans from Kenya when in season in this country.

Probably cheaper so they can make even more profit.

The demand for food is finite, we can only eat so much after all.
So the supermarkets sales are finite, they realised this some time ago and introduced the BOGOF offer, now they're selling you more food than you need, they've increased their market.
Of course you're going to throw some food out as it goes off/stale or out of date. Are the supermarkets bothered? Are they heck.

Tescos do usually have on the price label a price by weight or volume so you can compare and see which product is cheaper. I really don't like Tescos, but have to for now for some things :-\

I think that my local Sainsburys hate me.  Every time I go in, I find these BOGOF deals, partner up with someone who only wants to buy one, and sort it out at the checkout!  :excited:   I also make myself a real pain in the arse and take a calculator with me, so any different size packages also gets analysed, and then I tell people also buying the product.  It is such a con, it really makes me angry!  If price for a single item goes up noticeably between shops, I then ask to speak to the manager and accuse them of over pricing, and disenfranchising the elderly etc etc who only want to buy one.  I also HATE with a vengeance, those tickets they give you saying "your shop would have been £2.30 cheaper"at another shop "here's a voucher you can use next time" and then date it so short that you can never redeem them!  I have taken to doing my shop short of one or two items and then if I get one of these vouchers, I put my groceries in the car and go straight back in to get a freebie!  They must hate me mustn't they?  Ha ha!

I never look at the "price"  I always check the price per 100grms - its normally on the small price lable on the shelf.  Its easy to stick a nought on the end and work out the price per Kilo.  You have to watch for things packed in some sort of liquid or sold with a "sauce" , but they are normally marked on the packet as to how much of each

Have done that for years, its in very small lettering and they try to make it as difficult as possible but it should always be there

I once grabbed some  'suits'. In Morrisons and asked them why they were selling Hot X Buns when it wasn't Easter. I didn't accept their reply that 'they're popular with the customers' either. I told them to take the crosses off and sell them as fruit buns. Also objected to them selling chicken manure in the 'dairy' aisle, took that one to the environmental health as I didn't accept it was sterile, it did get moved and I've not seen it since.
Does that count?  :eyelashes:

I, too take no notice of BOGOF's, 'nor the vouchers that say "50p. off whatever if you spend £2 when the product is £1-99. And have you noticed, you never see BOGOF on gin ::) ::)

Sylvia, No you do not see bogof offers on spirits,  ??? would be fantastic to see it on a bottle of Morgan's, Vodka, whisky even beer,  :'( the selection boxes will be in the shops soon and then before Xmas has been and gone they will have the Easter eggs in before the year ends. Supermarkets Hype up these events just to get the custom.

Dan you will need to get the Xmas icons on here soon  ;)

Very occassionally BOGOFs are okay if I was going to buy anyway and need it regularly, but I hate the psychology of trying to trick bedraggled housewives into thinking they are saving money.

Seems to me you need a degree in maths, psychology and environmental studies to be able to negotiate your way around the supermarkets these days.

Well dne all you independant thinkers.

On the very rare occasion i go to a supermarket , i just buy what i want and nothing else . I am almost oblivious to their rip offs .
If i notice anything with gm , aspartame , sucralose or msg , i get very clumsy and drop said item , oops ! , aren't i a clumsy old fart ?
Petty it may be  , but i never said i was perfect ! I also eat pork pies and grapes etc as i wonder the store , my own form of bogof , buy one eat one free !

I know they are not everywhere but I would like to advertise the wonders of Lidl!!
It doesn't have everything you need and some stuff is not of best quality but for staples is brilliant, tends to be cheaper than all the "big boys" and in many cases tastier. My favorites are the tomato passata in the Tetrapak and the Italian Extra virgin olive oil - £2.25 for 750ml! And, it is actually good oil (trust the Italian to buy olive oil).

Our local Lidl also has local meat and veg, all very seasonal like it's supposed to be (no strawberry nonsense in December!) and although selection isn't always massive, it's nice stuff. Yogurts and chocolate also very good.

Plus, OH likes the random offers in the non-food isles, where they sell anything from socks to barbecues to sewing machines! Not that we buy much, it's just the comedy value  ;)

Though unfortunately my hero Lidl doesn't sell decent tea or camomile, or things like capers or risotto rice. That's when we go to Tesco!

Welshcob, I got capers and risotto rice in our local Lidl. Thing is they don't have things like capers all the time, you have to get a few jars whilst they're there. I have a recipe for pickled nastursium seeds that is very similar if you would like it.

Sounds nice, yes please! But where do I get nasturtium seeds?!?  ???

I think every Lidl has different assortments. Our local keeps stuff that probably sells well here, maybe not many ask for risotto rice. We used to live near a dodgy area and the Lidl there didn't have much else but frozen chips/pizzas/take away food, cheap nasty cheese and ham and they kept no olive oil!! Only the nasty veg one for deep frying.  :-J

Happy with new Lidl  ;D

I wish we had a Lidl or Aldi near us.  We live in a very big town but they are both over the other side.  Tesco is five minutes away.  OH does most of the shopping and he goes to Asda because he can get there easily by bus.

Not bothered about milk but my OH is addicted to baked beans.  (Could tell you a funny story about that).  I shall have to try and persuade him.  Trouble is, when I started working full time, he took over the shopping and enjoys it - doesn't want me along now I'm retired - and he's got very fixed ideas about where to shop.  Maybe I just need to sneak out and stock up.

MY OH likes going shopping at night, Tesco then Asda, seeing what's being sold off on 'Sell by' date. we get to try some interesting things  ::) , he gets to meet his like minded friends, mostly of different ethnic groups. I don't think he likes me with him, I cramp his style, and I don't like joining the 'scrum' when the reductions are going on, but I do like watch it  ;D .
Talking to a friend one day I mentioned this, turns out her hubby is just the same, we decided it was a male age related thing, come to think of it, I very rarely see white (sorry, don't know how else to put it) females in the scrum.
