Hi all, have just been doing some summer reading of 2 lightweight but great books and a great DVD I thought you all may enjoy on our favourite subject:
Diary of a Farmers Wife by Anne Hughes: could have been written today, its about smallholders day to day in late 1700s, funny, interesting, informative, written in 'olde' language (but adapted so you can still read it), its a real diary and a really great read.
Fat of the Land, by John Seymour: am just getting the sequel to this as I enjoyed this one so much. Godfather of smallholding, its late 1950's as he just gets started 'accidentally' - not really caring or knowing much about what he's doing at the start, then gradually finding out how to make things work out. Its very funny in bits and all too familiar in others. Really great read.
Tales from the Green Valley DVD - personally I love all things Tudor and this is a Tudor Farm in the making. Its a Victorian Farm (tv) predecessor - you may have caught it on telly (think it was maybe about 10 years ago now) it has some of the Victorian Farm presenters in it. We didn't see it then and I just came across it on Amazon and bought it - we watched it after we had seen Victorian Farm on telly (so a couple of years ago now) and found it very inspirational and beautiful and in fact loved it much more than VF. Think we'll watch it again come the darker evenings as we don't watch telly, only dvds.
Big definitely worth watching, much better even than Victorian Farm.
That's it, things to enjoy and remember why we all do what we do (as if you needed reminding). Enjoy.
