Title: Nostoc commune eradication
Post by: Foobar on August 09, 2012, 10:09:02 am
Anyone know a good way to get rid of "Nostoc commune"? (other than super strong bleach)
It's that slimey algae stuff that seems to be spreading all over our pathways and yard  -  see here for a picture: http://www.irishlichens.ie/pages-algae/a-05.html (http://www.irishlichens.ie/pages-algae/a-05.html)

Would a coating of hydrated lime do it?

Oh  .... me too please ...its driving me mad.  When it dries up for a few days I think its gone, then with the first bit of rain it re-constitues itself.  It got to about 3" deep in places when it was really wet,  :raining:  and I have had several falls because of it  >:(   plus it looks disgusting

Thanks SFS, I have my fingers crossed we can rid our place of this.

Apparently it's very nutritious ... but not very harvest-able when its spread all over the drive gravel!  Doh.

I had this stuff growing all over a flat roof. I tried all sorts and in the end the only way I got rid was to manually scrape it up and throw away. I had bucket loads of it and a sore back to boot! Hasn't come back for a year. It's wierd because none of my neighbours had it on their roofs. Godness knows how it got there.

This appears to be back with a vengance!

Currently having customers calling asking what product is best for a "sea weed" type algae.
