Title: Randy boars?
Post by: Button End Beasts on August 05, 2012, 09:00:43 am
Soon I need to do the difficult task of splitting up our 3 OSBS gilts,  :'( ,2 are going for pork, 1 we want to keep. We recently got 2 GOS weaners that I thought would be company for the OSB. Stupidly, I got boars as i wasnt even thinking of them getting randy at an early age, I think robert said they might try it on at 3 months?

So will I be able to keep the gilt in a separate pen next to the boys? Or will the gilt coming in to season drive them mad? They will be separated by stock fencing with a strand of electrric on either side. The GOS are 9 weeks now and will go for pork at approx 6 mo.

The other possibility is that we could take our OSB gilt to a neighbouring farm where he has 2 Kune Kune gilts to keep ours company. But this would probably be quite stressful for her?

Any suggestion gratefully received!

iv found my tammie boy weaners will start to try it on about 4mths ish if they get a chance, not saying they r mating successfully but certainly trying to mount. at the minute, due to their age differences, surely they will not b able to reach anyway. but u dont want hormones/stress affecting the meat either.
we have kept solitary sows in their own park (admittedly pregnant - or post weaning) with no problems. they have been in sight of other pigs for some of the day, just depends where abouts in the field they r if they can see each other, but no signs of distress ref loneliness.
if the pelt from electric is strong enough, im sure itl keep em back.

I've got the opposite probs with my KKs - the boars stay put (SoS is such a softie, he won't even go near the fence, even when it's off  ;D  ) - it's my matriach Portia that walks through the electric fencing 3 days in a row, every 3 weeks  :o   - little hussy  ;)
