Hello everyone :wave: I'm looking for some registered Ryeland ewes to expand my little flock. They need to be old enough to go to the ram this time so shearlings or older would be great. We are based in Shropshire.

The RFBS show and sale at Ludlow is soon, just not sure exactly when. VSS will know if she comes on or check the RFBS website.

I have a couple of shearlings for sale, but might be a bit too far for you. In northern Ceredigion. Was thinking of taking them to show & sale, but have been so busy at home, had not had time to think about that.

I'm 10 mile away from Aberystwyth southeasterly.
If you go the show & sale. Get your seat early as it gets very crowded there.
If you want to bid on something just bid as if you were bidding at any auction. You pay for anything you purchase before leaving the mart as you will need a movement license. It is really good at this show & sale as every society member will go out of their way to help you.

Normally you register with the auctioneers and they give you a card with a number - this is what you bid with. All the stuff about nods and winks, well, most folk just raise the card. The auctioneer will have a watcher who'll be looking for bidders so when you want to bid for the first time, catch their eye. Then they'll watch you for further bids and even invite bids form you. Once bidding closes, if you are successful, show them the number and they will note that down as the winning bidder.
Get a catalogue and do your homework before you go. Try and get there early to view the stock, decide what you are interested in. Set yourself a maximum that you are prepared to pay and TRY to stick to it.
Once the sale is over (for you.If your animals are through early, this may be well before the end of the sale), go to the office, give them your number and pay. DO check how they will accept payment - none of ours up here take cards of any sort - it's cash or cheque. And remember there will be a mart % on what you pay plus prices may also be in guineas (?) so check the catalogue so that you don't get any surprises at the cash desk.
If an animal you are interested in doesn't sell ie doesn't make the seller's reserve, it's sometimes worth seeking out the seller and trying for a private sale. Most folk don't really want to take stock home again.
You will feel nervous; it's the adrenalin and the thrill of the chase ;D
Others may have other advice and I'm sure SallyintNorth had a really good post about markets a while ago.

I don't remember ever having a number to bid at this sale.
VSS will put you right about that as it might have changed. As Rosemary said, go early and view what stock is available. You should receive a catalogue if you are a RFBS member and know what animal belongs to whom. It is also helpful to view the online flock book if you have access to it as it will show you the pedigree of the animal. Ask the sellers if you are interested in what you see. They won't bite and if they do perhaps you shouldn't buy from them. Above all else enjoy the experience. :thumbsup:

up here they go thru catalogue really quick so u can get lost and miss the ones u want if ur not careful.
take a pen to mark the catalogue and tick em off.
i love auctions. great buzz.

My son James has 4 gorgeous girl shearlings for sale, ready to be tupped this year. We are on the Lincs Notts border so maybe not too far away. He travelled up to North Yorkshire to get his first ewes. :)

Some woman did ring me after some coloured ryelands, which I haven't got at moment. At the time I did say I had some Ryeland shearlings, but they are now possibly sold to someone else.
On another subject, have you any lamb this year for sale, and if so what price are you looking for as haven't got any lambs this year.

Only ram lambs :eyelashes: .... the ewe lambs both white and coloured were booked practically before they hit the deck at birth ;D . I've kept Sweetpea ( :love: :love: very tiny and adorable Coloured) and Salvia -White who needed a bit of TLC and topping up as Mum only has half an udder working and brother pushed in first - typical boy ::) )

I've got 3 Kerry Hill Xbred ram lambs that I bought in as Mollies as I had bucket loads of goats milk spare. They've still got a fair bit of growing to do but are obviously destined for someones freezer but that's all that's not booked :yum: .
