We have built the hen house and fenced it off (almost) and done our homework. However there seems to be lots of different suggestions for nest boxes (yes - I know hens don't need bedding as such!!)
What is the best? Straw or wood shavings? All suggestions welcome, and if there is anyone out there who lives in France (Haute Vienne) - where can we get it from ?!
Many thanks

I use straw because it's cheap and readily available, and composts down well with all the grass cuttings I have through the summer. You're local Point Vert or Agrial will sell it by the small bale, I think, around 1-2 euros a bale........ Ree

straw is best but clean hay or shavings. i find the shavings get knocked out to easy.

Thanks for that info - I shall check out the local Point Vert - never heard of it before! Straw sound more 'comfy' anyway doesn't it? None of those sharp bits of wood :D Also it's a good point about the composting - hadn't thought of that ....
Many thanks for your help

I use sawdust from spring to autumn, then when it starts getting a bit nippy at nights I top up the sawdust with straw to keep them cosy :)
