Title: sick boar
Post by: thestephens on July 05, 2012, 12:43:42 pm
Boris was fine yesterday morning and lunch time but when we went to move him to a different field he wouldnt get up from his house, pushing and shoving to no avail, food etc. We gave him a jab of penecillan but this morning i wasnt sure what i would find but he was at the door of the ark, the food that we had left, eaten, but he was not stepping over the threshold! we finally got him moving but on our wee walk to the field he threw up several times, a horrible stinky white stull that sort of resembled pasta and then muddy water.
2 of our hens disappeared yesterday (thats a total of 14) but i think the fox goes through boris pen to get to them do you think Boris has snaffled a hen, would that make him sick?
otherwise nothing has changed, has he hoovered up mud while eating hen?
will check on him again soon and then call the vet but any advise would be good!

It wasn't worms he threw up, followed by stomach bile maybe ? (Just thinking out loud, please don't be offended  ;))

I've not had this with any of my pigs mrs, so can't say for sure but if he is up to date with worming I'd be suspecting him as a chicken muncher  :-\ Don't know what effect it has on pigs, but it didn't have a great effect on Boris  :dog: when he was munching mine  ::)

As long as he's drinking (might have to resort to watered down fruit juice  ;)) it's probably better to starve him for a day to just clear out his system - sounds like he's got a bit of a bellyache !
Hope he's feeling better soon, if he's not got a temp or looking distressed I'd hang on 24 hours before getting the vet.

Interesting problem, and if you see "pasta" it could well be worms as HH suggests.

But could it also be the quills from the hen feathers?  If it was, then they would have irritated the lining of his stomach like mad, so could well have caused him to throw up and be very unhappy.

As HH says - ensure he has liquid - if he is reluctant to leave the ark, then put some in for him, or if he'll come outside, don't make him walk miles to find his trough.

Pasta coloured, more taglitelle than little worms (he is up to date)  just found him at the water trough and have given him some squash, still looking sorry for himself but glad to see him out and drinking.
the hen is the only thing i can think of as Poppy has had exactly the same and she is her usual self!
will check again later but im much happier now! first time in 6 years ive had a sick pig, never had to read that page in my pig books, then you think the worst.

I'm still swaying more towards worms  :-\ Pig worms are longer and flatter - not like earth worms  ;)
Have a google for a photo (just not close to mealtime  ;D)
What do you use to worm him ?
And without getting too gross - how much was there ? A cupful, bowlful or bucketfull ?

Good he's up and drinking - I'm probably just being over cautious  ::) ;)
Keep us up to date with how he's getting on.

Oh, go on Alison, post a piccy of it - I dare you  ;) ;D
One of my OH's OSB sows ate a chuck last week  :o  It had been hopping in & out of their pen for ages, leaving them a lovely warm egg most days.  Don't know why it happened (maybe Robert's right about the extra protein  ;)  ), but it was AWFUL, I just couldn't get in there quick enough to save her & I never want to experience that again  :'(  The sow wasn't sick after wards - but I bl**dy well wish she had - serve her right  >:(

Hope Boris is on mend, agree with others sounds like he's been naughty and eaten something he shouldn't. Depending what vet says i'd be tempted to separate him if you can and starve him for 24hrs but make sure he has plenty to drink (electrolytes if poss).
:fc:  he makes a full recovery.

the vet has been, he felt something hard in his stomach, could be a blockage (aint seen him poo) if he was older the vet would be thinking a growth etc, low temprature too.
He got an anti biotic and another to pep him up
think the vet quite liked him, but Boris must be ill to stand and get 2 jabs without running away with a syringe stuck in him!
fingers crossed for my boy

Can you post a photo of him Alison ? (either here or on FB) Doesn't need to be one that's been taken since he was ill or anything, I just need to know what he looks like  ;) Will send some reiki for poor Boris once I've seen it  :-*

I remember reading on the KK site a while back about kidney stones and giving pure juice to help (can't remember if it was cranberry or apple though) though this could be completely unrelated to that, it could just be a big lump of chicken  :o

Keeping  :fc: for you and Boris

not much better we got him out today so we could clean out his house and give him nice fresh bedding, once he was up he had a long pee, took some water and had a wee wander, its definately his tummy thats sore, vet said to see how he is monday/tues. i think if i can get him up and out he would be better than moping inside, but you know if you are ill you want to pull the duvet over your head!!
see what tomorrow brings.....

Well a bit better today, actually saw him poo this morning, picked them up for investigation and if i had passed by them i would have thought is was a grey/black stones, when you knocked them it sounded like stones and it took a bit of work to get it broken but then just looked like earth, there was little bits of feather!!
Back to see him just now and he finally took a banana (peeled and fed to him!!!) and i found another stone type poo.......keep them coming i say, need to get him some grapes, things are looking better :fc:

My Kunekunes all love melon too and it's got a high water content so will help loosen the dry stool  ;)
Grapes and mangoes are good too - depends on how spoilt they are  :innocent: :D
I'll keep sending reiki to your poor boy  :-*

Pigs do hoover up stones when they're digging and gruffling somewhere on the old spot website there was a case about it. Will try to find link, hate to say outcome was not good, at least if he's starting to pass them its a start may be worth trying some bran and molasses and plenty of fresh fruit if you can as HH said.
Mandy :pig: :fc:
found the bit about stones
We now de stone our fields on a regular basis. As we have stock fencing the stones are used to help keep the fencing near to the ground and deter sows from digging underneath them.
A couple of years ago we had a compliance visit from Defra regarding our single farm payment. The vet was a former pig keeper from east Anglia and one of the things they check on outdoor units is the amount of stones in the paddocks. If excessive then a failure would be recorded and the SFP would be reduced. She told me she had performed pm's on sows with 25kg of stones in their stomachs which had eventually ruptured.

Just a thought. Mandy :pig:

i didnt know that. i remember reading somewhere (defra pig guide?) about levels of stones in paddock, and i presuming it was talking about damaging the feet etc.

 :fc:  for the boar.

Tomorrows target is for him to be waiting at the gate for me tomorrow, his reward will be meeting his 8 children who we will move out tomorrow, we wont mention that his son for the 1st litter is off  to Millers tomorrow!
