I just witnessed Sparrow, my black andalusian pullet, lay her first ever egg. What are the chances of that?! That I would actually be there and see it plop out rather unceremoniously onto the floor with a bump :D She is the first chicken I have raised from an egg to laying herself, so it was a rather special moment I witnessed. The egg is very small and pure white. Beautiful. She was not best pleased about the whole affair. Lots of squawking and pacing, I imagine it must have been a bit painful! She is 21 weeks and 3 days old, so starting her egg laying career quite young.
I shall have to make something special with it when I eat it, seems a shame to destroy it!

Brilliant
All that squawking is to get everyone to admire what a clever girl they've just been :D All mine do it, make a right fuss :D Seems a funny thing to do if you want your egg to survive but then there's no accounting for chooks ;)

And the cockerals are the worst of all ::) lets every magpie. crow & rook within a 5 mile radius know there's a tasty, warm treat available ???

bless her, well done Sparrow!
I'll never forget being squashed in the chicken run, cleaning & filling up holes under the shed... one of the girls kept climbing onto my knee or settling in the bit I was trying to dig. Eventually, I gave in moving her & let her sit in my lap (any excuse for a breather) and she decided it was the perfect to lay her egg  :chook:
