We have 10 acres of agricultural land which we have spent a lot of time and money turning into a lovely hay meadow from a ragwort filled piece of wasteland.
We need a barn for storage of hay and machinery plus temporary housing for lambing/shearing etc. Our issue is we live in an area of outstanding natural beauty and people looking onto the field do not want to look at a building.
Planning are going to refuse unless we move it further away, out of sight and hide with trees etc which will be easy pickings for machinery thieves.
Anyone know what we can legally do on a temporary basis without going through planning? We are based in Wiltshire

You wont be able to erect a building using agricultural notification rather than full planning due to your holding not meeting the minimum 5 hectares (about 12.5 acres) for Class A rights under the Planning Act. Unless you have more land within 5 miles on the same holding number.

(NB for any size holding, stables/horsey stuff is not agricultural and so needs PP anyway, not relevant for your query but for others reading. eg we qualify as have 40 acres but still needed full PP and building regs for our stable block).
You cant put up any permanent building as such without getting PP for it. The only option for the lambing might be some kind of mobile thing, maybe a lorry or something! But hay storage, the only option might be an old fashioned haystack :-)
If you want a building for hay and lambing then you probably need to work with the planners/neighbours to come up with something that is workable, it may require spending more ££ on security/CCTV etc if it has to be somewhere screened.

Could you rent more land nearby?

Ask your neighbours - if they shun you - go through the proper channels (complicated)
If your neighbours aint gona dob you in - build it out of sight and worry about it later.

There is a huge straw bale building on our land here - been here for over 15 years and its still standing, timber and polytunnel plastic roofing.....possibilities ......a 'sod' earth barn, or a dug out if you have a bit of a hill?
