Title: Prolapse vent
Post by: SmallTimeSmallholder on June 22, 2012, 11:54:30 am
Help! My poor chicken has a prolapse vent. Does anyone have any experience to what to do or administer? I have read to bathe, trim feathers and use honey but surely modern medicine can come up with something better than that?!?
To make matters worse, we are off on holiday tomorrow leaving them in the care of the in-laws  ???
Plaese help if you can.
Many thanks x

The honey or sugar is to reduce the swelling.

Truthfully, the couple I've dealt with I've sprayed what was showing with Terramycin spray, used a bit of lambing lube (or baby oil) and pushed it back in. You need to do this very gently and slowly, but completely, and hold it there for a minute. Both stayed put and caused no more problems.

You can also use Anusol or other piles cream to reduce the swelling, we did this with one very successfully and the second was not such a success.

Make sure you spray well with purple spray as any sign of red, the others will be pecking it. Can you isolate the hen while you are away?

STS,
I had this problem a couple of months ago. There is a long thread on it somewhere with a link to a utube video showing what to do which was a great help.
OH held the chicken under his arm whilst I washed and dried the area and then put honey on and pushed the prolapse back in. I am quite squeemish but found it easy to do once I had done it once.
Over a couple of days I did this about half a dozen times, progressing from honey to Prep H. Eventually the prolapse stayed put.

The hen was in solitary confinement for about a week to make sure that the others didn't peck her.

She is fine now but doesn't lay eggs  :(

Thank you everyone, I have separated her and am waiting for hubby to come home for extra pair of hands- that'll be a nice way to end the day!  :-J

Phew- she is all sorted. She'll be living a life of luxury for the next week in the polytunnel. Hopefully she'll eat all the slugs!!!
Thanks for all the advice!  :-*

It probably wasn't as bad as you had imagined was it?

I felt worse for her to be honest! Hopefully she'll be sorted now. Just typical that it would happen the day before we go away!
Keep your fingers crossed all stays put!

It happened to me a while ago, looked like the chook had a plum tomato coming out. After putting things back in place, Prep H and 2 days solitary she was grand. Bloody scary at the time, though.  :bouquet:
