Title: Do cuckoos sing on the wing?
Post by: Possum on June 18, 2012, 09:13:56 am
On the odd occasions when the sun shines, we sometimes hear a cuckoo calling. Yesterday the sound seemed to be circling quite quickly. I don't think there was time for the cuckoo to fly from one tree to another and not be calling in between. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I have just learnt something new today!  I checked in our copy of Birds of the Western Paleartic and it says that cuckoos will call while perched and IN FLIGHT.  I never knew that.

That's great to know. I thought ! was going mad at the time, but it was the only explanation I could think of.
