Title: Check your nipples!
Post by: colliewoman on June 11, 2012, 09:44:38 pm
:o  Seriously, learn from my mistake here and if you are buying new shiny nanny goats/goatlings in to give you lots of milk, do yourself a favour and check their teats well.
I have just discovered, upon milking Millie for the first time that she has 2 orifices in the one teat which means milk everywhere except the bucket :'( :'(
Other than a milking machine that I neither have nor can afford at the moment, I have no idea how I am going to milk her :-\

Oh, that's a pain, I'm sorry to hear that.

I use an Udderly Ez (http://udderlyez.com/goat_milkers.php) to milk with, which I think would cope with that situation as her teat would be in the tube. It's a little hand pump (a bit like a breast pump).

Not as cheap as a bucket, but a lot cheaper than a milking machine.

I've used mine for three years now, absolutely no problems with any of my goats, either not liking being milked with it nor with their udders - never had sore udders or mastitis.

What a nuisance.  I checked Cloud's teats when I chose her but didn't look that closely - just made sure she had two good ones.  Hope, when the time comes, she only has one hole in each.  My milking goat now (Pom, aka Snowdrift) had teats which stuck out the sides when she first came into milk and I had to milk one side at a time or miss the bucket.  They seem to have adjusted now and I can direct two streams into the bucket at once.

apparently u can get defects in GG goats which show up as herring bone shaped orifices, and that doesnt squirt out straight either. i didnt know that either til this week.

Maybe that's why she was for sale? ??? Even though that is not a problem that can easily be spotted early on (until they come into milk that is), I would think it is unethical to sell that animal onto someone. I would go back to the seller and explain that this is unacceptable... (and yes if byuing a goat-in-milk it is always necessary to check their teats....)

How about slipping a condom over the teet , cutting the end off so any side squirts are directed downwards, dont forget to buy the flavoured ones though. :innocent:

This is one of the 3 I bought as goatlings last June, Any purpose type affair, not strictly sold as dairy goats. Hey ho you live and learn.
Too bad I love her to bits, can't part with her now :( especially as ethically there is only one place for her to go :'(
Never mind, I'll find a way and only ever put her to a meat billy so the kids can go in the freezer.
Bugger.

Wish I was nearer, I could come and show you this little milking thing - if you can stretch to one, i think it'd just solve the problem  :-*

If you bought her as a goatling it would not have been an obvious problem at that time.... so that is really bad luck I guess.  :-\

However if you are clear that she is not producing offpsring with a milking career planned for them you should be ok... just means she is unsellable really...

Probably just as well for her that she ended up here, cos I can't sell my girls! I can part with kids no probs but not my girlies :D
She has given me some cracking boer crosses though and has fed then wonderfully, so the person they are going to will be over the moon! I swap stud services plus boarding for the kids for meat so fortunately those plans are unaffected
Shame I don't like goat meat really....
Thankies  for all the advice, don't know what I'd do without this forum :-* :-*

I have one with exactly the same problem. Milk everywhere when I tried to milk her once her kids had been weaned. She now is suckling twin lambs successfully. So she has her uses. I plan to try and get her in kid early for next year and then use her again for the pet lambs. Saves me bottle feeding them too.  :)
