hi looking for someone to shear 6 shetland sheep in Aberdeen
-
pure shetlands should self shear? we have a few and only have to clip a small amount off with hand shears as most of them fully self shear just a couple only do half a job lol
-
My five will roo their fleece one year but not the next, this year they have, last year they didn't. I don't know why, something to do with temperatures? :-\ The downside is you have to spend a lot of every day coaxing their fleece off or going around the fields picking it up.

My Shetlands mostly dont self shear, a couple do, and it does vary by year.
You could PM Dougal on here, he 'might' come over your way if sufficiently bribed....

With only 6 to do - get yourself a pair of double-bowed clippers, tie them up in a head harness into a corner of two hurdles, and off you go! In shetlands you should see the break between old and new growth quite easily, so just shear in there!. Also you can hand-roo them, if not all in one go, but just what comes off easily.
It is really not worth for a shearer to come out and set up for 6 sheep, especially now that they are getting busy.
Or get them to a neighbours farm when they do theirs.

Get yourself onto one of the wool board's shearing courses and do it yourself! Even if you aren't perfect afterwards, the courses tend to be good fun... And you might find somebody in your area who'd help you with the shearing.
Sorry - for whatever reason it won't let me copy and paste - just google it... ::)

I bought a DVD from the WMB on how to shear sheep. I haven't looked at it as I don't have any sheep yet but would definitely like to give it a try myself.

Thanks everybody! I'm going to try and do it my self. ;D

I shear for a living and live not too far from Aberdeen. If you are struggling to shear them yourself then PM me and I'll happily see if I can get to you some evening. 5 will take me about 20 minutes to shear. I'd need something for my time and fuel but I'll not rip you off.
Cheers Mark

Do you ever come down to Fife, Dougal? I have 10 scruffy Hebrideans needing shorn. I bought hand shears, but am too frightened to use them, they're so sharp! :)
-
If your looking in Fife, the guy who shears my sheep is just up the road from me and may be able to help.. PM me if you would like his number.

Thanks, will do! :)
