Title: Pond Plant
Post by: JulieS on June 01, 2012, 01:30:17 pm
I have a plant that is growing in the pond and I can't seem to find out what it is.....Any ideas???

It's rooted to the edges and seems to be trailing towards the island.  It doesn't grow too quickly, but I'm going to have to get rid of some this year I think.

I'd love to find out what it is.

Many thanks.

I have had a look, the only thing that is close is marsh cinquefoil.but that is rare in the south of England. Dose it have flowers on it,and what time of year ? that would help a lot with the I.D. Sorry can't be more help.

I have the County Wildlife Officer coming in a week or two.  I'll get her to have a look too and see if she can ID it.

Will let you know.

It might be a potentilla of some sort. Not actually a pond plant but will grow on the bank and trail into the water. I will do some searching on the web and see if I can find any more info.

This is Potentilla palustris, marsh cinquefoil. Similar?

The marsh cinquefoil? Sadly this was a library pic, I don't have any - it's pretty isn't it?

It does look very similar to that, but this one doesn't flower.

You're very welcome to a bit of the one here.

Is it quite rampant in a small area - perhaps that's why it doesn't flower?  If not - maybe it's not what we think it is.

Well after telling you all that it doesn't flower.....it hasn't for the last 3 years, it now has lots of those flowers on there.

So marsh cinquefoil it is!

Many thanks for your help.  If anyone wants a cutting let me know.
