Title: DEFRA approved disinfectant
Post by: Bionic on May 24, 2012, 08:05:15 am
There was a recent topic that included something about disinfectant but I can't find it.

I understand that when you move animals the vehicle has to be disinfected with something approved by DEFRA. I have just looked at their approved list and its very confusing to me.

Can anyone recommend a good DEFRA approved general purpose disinfectant?

thanks
Sally

Hiya Sally

I use jeyes fluid for cleaning and Virkon for disinfecting.
The virkon I have is small sachets of powder that you mix with water - I'm sure it was Fearing I bought it from (but since I'm in the middle of sorting accounts I can't put my hand on the invoice ::) )

I do same as HH. Jeyes then Vikron.
Vikron sachets and big tubs can be bought at your local agricultural merchant, a sachets only something like £1.99.
I also use a powder disinfectant in my wooden floored huts in winter when its too cold for them to dry out but can't remember what its called. Won't buy any now until July but its lemony and seems to do the job.

Thanks Ladies,

I already have Jeyes fluid (I just love the smell) and will get some Vikron sachets just in case I ever get inspected.

If You are serious about Hygene and cross contamination on your Smallholding or Farm rather than just having someting in the cupboard in case of inspections then use Sorgene 5 broad spectrum disinfectant which is approved by DEFRA and has a wide range of applications (Pigs / Poultry / Sheep / Cattle & Equine)

The Link to the data sheet is here :  http://www.pestcontrol.basf.co.uk/agroportal/pc_uk/media/migrated/rural_pest_control/leaflets_1/11816___SORGENE_A5_BOOKLET___MAY_08.pdf (http://www.pestcontrol.basf.co.uk/agroportal/pc_uk/media/migrated/rural_pest_control/leaflets_1/11816___SORGENE_A5_BOOKLET___MAY_08.pdf)

Thanks

We use either Agrichlor (tablets) or Virkon S (powder) & the pressure washer.  I prefer the smell of Virkon out of the 2, but I do admit to liking the smell of Jeyes too  ;D
